French President Emmanuel Macron was greeted with boos and whistles at the opening of the Paris Agricultural Fair on Saturday by angry farmers who blame him for not doing enough to support them.<\/p>\n

\n

Macron was scheduled to visit the event, which draws crowds of visitors every year. But before the official opening, several dozen protesters forced their way through security barriers and entered the site as the president was arriving.<\/p>\n

Farmers\u00a0have been protesting for months<\/a>\u00a0across France, including Paris, to demand better living conditions, simpler regulations and better protection against foreign competition they see as unfair.<\/p>\n

Police in full riot gear were deployed at the Paris Agricultural Fair to prevent them from getting close to Macron, who had a planned meeting with the heads of France\u2019s main farmers\u2019 unions.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, protesters chanted slogans calling for Macron to \u201cresign\u201d and blew into whistles to show their anger.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t be able to respond to the farming crisis in a few hours,\u201d Macron said. \u201cIt has taken months, years of work for those who came here to present their cattle, their work \u2026 This fair must go well and calmly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three weeks ago, farmers\u00a0lifted roadblocks around Paris<\/a>\u00a0and elsewhere around the country after the government offered more than 400 million euros ($433 million) in aid and tax breaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnger can be expressed,\u201d Macron said, warning against any \u201cviolence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The French president decided to meet with groups of protesters in a separate room. He promised \u201cfloor prices\u201d will be established for each product to \u201cguarantee farmers\u2019 income.\u201d He also said an emergency plan to financially relieve the most struggling farms will start being implemented on Monday.<\/p>\n

Macron said a meeting will be held at the Elysee presidential palace in March to build \u201ca plan for the future of farming\u201d with farmers\u2019 unions and other key players in the food industry.<\/p>\n

One farmer asked the president to say \u201cin front the cameras you are going to give oxygen to the farmers \u2026 Do that and I guarantee you will calm everyone down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Macron answered: \u201cYou have grievances. You do not have a government that\u2019s completely deaf \u2026 It\u2019s not true that nothing\u2019s been done.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later officially inaugurated the fair, an opening delayed by several hours because of the protest.<\/p>\n

Macron then mingled with farmers presenting their cattle and products, starting with Normandy cows and camembert cheese \u2014 while protesters could still sporadically be heard loudly whistling.<\/p>\n

The move come as\u00a0farmers across Europe<\/a>\u00a0are protesting\u00a0against EU agriculture policies<\/a>, bureaucracy and overall business conditions.<\/p>\n

Farmers complain that the 27-nation bloc\u2019s environmental policies, such as the\u00a0Green Deal<\/a>, which calls for limits on the use of chemicals and on greenhouse gas emissions, limit their business and make their products more expensive than non-European Union imports.<\/p>\n

On Friday, farmers on their tractors staged a\u00a0demonstration in the streets of Paris<\/a>\u00a0before the Agricultural Fair.<\/p>\n
