Women may get more health benefits from regular exercise\u2014including a lower risk of an early death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>They say anything men can do, women can do better\u2014which may include reaping the health benefits of regular exercise. That\u2019s according to a new study published today in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2023.12.019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An international team of researchers from the U.S. and China showed that women who exercise regularly have a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/11\/11\/stair-climbing-heart-health-live-longer-longevity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">significantly lower risk of an early death<\/a> or a fatal cardiovascular event than men who do the same. On top of that, the advantage holds true even when women put in less effort.<\/p>\n<p>The observational study, which analyzed the exercise habits of more than 400,000 U.S. adults, found that compared to being inactive, engaging in regular physical activity lowered women\u2019s mortality risk by 24%. Men saw a 15% reduction in risk.<\/p>\n<p>Women who worked out also had a 36% reduced risk of a fatal cardiovascular event, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/06\/07\/insomnia-symptoms-trouble-sleeping-increased-stroke-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">stroke<\/a> or heart attack, than their inactive peers. Among men, those who were physically active showed a 14% reduced risk.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less is more for women\u2019s fitness<\/h2>\n<p>The current <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/physical-activity-guidelines\/current-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans<\/a>, developed by the Department of Health and Human Services, recommend at least 150-300 minutes of moderately intense aerobics plus two days of muscle-strengthening activities per week. That these guidelines apply to all adults\u2014regardless of sex\u2014puzzles <a href=\"https:\/\/researchers.cedars-sinai.edu\/Martha.Gulati\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Dr. Martha Gulati<\/a>, a coauthor of the study and director of preventive cardiology in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/programs\/heart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center<\/a> in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would it be the same for women versus men?\u201d Gulati, who is also the associate director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/programs\/heart\/specialties\/womens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Barbra Streisand Women\u2019s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai<\/a>, tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cWe know women are not small men; we know that there\u2019s physiologic differences. Is the same dose of exercise actually required?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Gulati and her colleagues sought to address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(19)30135-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">well-documented physical activity gap<\/a> between the sexes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know for young children, girls do less activity than [boys],\u201d she says. \u201cWe know that once they\u2019re young adults, we immediately see again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9338329\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">this persistent gap<\/a>. Men do more than women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This divide played out in the study too: 43% of male participants engaged in regular aerobic activity, compared to 33% of females. About 28% of men did regular muscle-strengthening activities, versus 20% of women. Men also did both types of exercise more frequently.<\/p>\n<p>While Gulati encourages everyone to find a fitness regimen that fits into their lifestyle, she hopes her team\u2019s findings that women may benefit from a less-is-more approach to exercise will inspire more women to get active.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" style=\"margin:auto;max-width:960px\"><span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;display:block;overflow:hidden;width:initial;height:initial;background:none;opacity:1;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;position:relative\"><span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;display:block;width:initial;height:initial;background:none;opacity:1;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;padding-top:66.5625%\"\/><noscript><\/noscript><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Male vs. female survival benefits of exercise<\/h2>\n<p>Reduced mortality risk from weekly moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity eventually plateaued for both sexes. But men had to exercise more than twice as long as women to realize the same results, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>It took about 300 minutes, or five hours, per week for men to achieve a maximum 18% lower mortality risk than their inactive peers. Women only had to complete 140 minutes, less than 2 \u00bd hours, to get the same benefit. Women topped out at a 24% lower mortality risk than their inactive peers at 300 minutes per week.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers observed similar sex differences concerning moderate and vigorous aerobics individually:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Moderate intensity\n<ul>\n<li>Men: 20% lower risk at 90 minutes\/week<\/li>\n<li>Women: 20% lower risk at 50 minutes\/week\n<ul>\n<li>Maximum 24% lower risk at 97 minutes\/week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vigorous intensity\n<ul>\n<li>Men: 19% lower risk at 110 minutes\/week<\/li>\n<li>Women: 19% lower risk at 57 minutes\/week\n<ul>\n<li>Maximum 24% lower risk at 120 minutes\/week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWomen got more bang for their buck,\u201d Gulati says.<\/p>\n<p>These findings aren\u2019t meant to suggest fitness enthusiasts shouldn\u2019t work out more than 300 minutes a week, she stresses, only that they likely wouldn\u2019t reap extra survival benefits. Further research is needed to determine whether additional exercise may positively impact other health indicators.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" style=\"margin:auto;max-width:960px\"><span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;display:block;overflow:hidden;width:initial;height:initial;background:none;opacity:1;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;position:relative\"><span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;display:block;width:initial;height:initial;background:none;opacity:1;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;padding-top:66.66666666666666%\"\/><noscript><\/noscript><\/span><figcaption>Women receive greater cardiovascular gains even if they work out less often than men, a February 2024 study says.<\/figcaption><p>Vanessa Nunes\u2014Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sex differences in exercise capacity<\/h2>\n<p>As with aerobic activity, women had a greater reduction in risk of premature death when it came to regular muscle-strengthening activity. Women saw a 19% lower risk than their inactive peers, while men saw an 11% lower risk.<\/p>\n<p>However, men had an optimum mortality benefit\u201414% lower risk relative to inactivity\u2014when they did muscle-strengthening activity three times a week. Women showed equal or greater benefit when engaging in such activity just once a week.<\/p>\n<p>So, why did men and women in this study achieve such different results? Gulati and her team cite males\u2019 \u201cmeasurably greater exercise capacity\u201d across all ages as one possible explanation. They highlighted these attributes of the male form:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proportionately larger hearts<\/li>\n<li>Wider lung airways<\/li>\n<li>Greater lung diffusion capacity<\/li>\n<li>Larger muscle fibers<\/li>\n<li>38% more lean body mass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These anatomical differences suggest that the same exercise may place different physiological demands on the female body such that it ultimately gains more health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not surprising that women gained additional benefits, given that they have relatively lower levels of physical engagement,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.gwu.edu\/departments\/exercise-and-nutrition-sciences\/jennifer-sacheck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Jennifer Sacheck, Ph.D.<\/a>, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.gwu.edu\/departments\/exercise-and-nutrition-sciences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences<\/a> at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, tells <em>Fortune<\/em> via email. \u201cThe greatest benefits in health outcomes and mortality risk are when people go from nothing or very little to something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, if women start at lower levels of physical activity than men, they get a lot of benefit from a small increase in physical activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who were the study participants?<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers reviewed two decades\u2019 worth of data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhis\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">National Health Interview Survey<\/a>, from 1997-2017, and linked participants\u2019 records to those of the National Death Index through 2019. People with an array of preexisting conditions, from cancer to chronic bronchitis to coronary heart disease, were excluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of the remaining 412,413 people in the participant pool, 55% were women, 14% identified as Black, and 18% identified as Hispanic.
