For one, the oceans have been steadily warming over the decades, absorbing something like 90 percent of the extra heat that humans have added to the atmosphere. \u201cThe oceans are our saviors, in a way,\u201d says biological oceanographer Francisco Chavez of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California. \u201cThings might be a lot worse in terms of climate impacts, because a lot of that heat is not only kept at the surface, it\u2019s taken to depths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A major concern with such warm surface temperatures is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nasas-pace-observatory-launch-spacex-aerosols-plankton\/\">health of the ecosystems floating there<\/a>: phytoplankton that bloom by soaking up the sun\u2019s energy and the tiny zooplankton that feed on them. If temperatures get too high, certain species might suffer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-heat-is-shaking-the-very-foundation-of-the-ocean-food-web\/\">shaking the foundations of the ocean food web<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But more subtly, when the surface warms, it creates a cap of hot water, blocking the nutrients in colder waters below from mixing upwards. Phytoplankton need those nutrients to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trawlers-release-co2-into-ocean-atmosphere\/\">properly grow and sequester carbon<\/a>, thus mitigating climate change. If warming-induced stratification gets bad enough, \u201cwe don\u2019t see what we would call a \u2018spring bloom,\u2019\u201d says Dennis Hansell, an oceanographer and biogeochemist at the University of Miami. \u201cThose are much harder to make happen if you don\u2019t bring nutrients back up to the surface to support the growth of those algae.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That puts serious pressure on an ecosystem that depends on these phytoplankton. Making matters worse, the warmer water gets, the less oxygen it can hold. \u201cWe have seen the growth of these oxygen minimum zones,\u201d says Hansell. \u201cOrganisms that need a lot of oxygen, they\u2019re not too happy when the concentrations go down in any way\u2014think of a tuna that is expending a lot of energy to race through the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In addition to plankton dealing with ever-higher temperatures due to global warming, there\u2019s also natural variability to consider here. Less dust has been blowing off the Sahara Desert recently, for example. Normally this plume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/saharan-dust-plumes-are-blowing-into-the-us\/\">wafts over to the Americas<\/a>, forming a giant umbrella that shades all that Atlantic water.
