Although he might look like a shop-floor stalwart from a distance, a closer glance reveals bundles of cabling and pipework concealed beneath his shell. He\u2019s wired up with sensors, plumbed into a liquid supply, and dotted with up to 150 individual pores that open when he gets warm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It sounds gross, but it\u2019s all by design\u2014ANDI is a highly sophisticated, walking, and yes, perspiring mannequin, part of a range of body-analog dummies developed by Seattle-based firm <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/thermetrics.com\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/thermetrics.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/thermetrics.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thermetrics<\/a>. (And they tend not to like it when you set them on fire.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So, from the 1940s onward, the US military began building the first thermal mannequins\u2014human-shaped heaters to test garments for soldiers. Say the army is sending soldiers somewhere cold and they need to know how many layers to send with each soldier. \u201cIf clothing can be optimized for the specific deployment environment, lower costs and safer soldiers clearly justifies the testing investment,\u201d says Burke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The technology evolved in the 1980s and 1990s as sportswear manufacturers began using it to put new products through their paces, while the addition of more individual heating zones to the mannequins added further realism. Recent developments include internal cooling and ANDI\u2019s modified sweating function, which can be paired with a computer simulation of human physiology to mimic the body\u2019s attempt to heat and cool itself. \u201cOur mannequins are just a shell.
