A report this week that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman seeks to raise up to $7 trillion had many tech-industry observers scratching their heads. The amount easily exceeds the market cap of any company\u2014including Microsoft<\/a>, which recently hit $3.1 trillion and surged past<\/a> Apple<\/a> as America\u2019s most valuable company.<\/p>\n

Of course, Microsoft has been propelled by the boom in artificial intelligence kicked off by ChatGPT maker OpenAI, in which it is the largest investor. But as AI weaves its way into how we work and play in the years ahead, Altman foresees a problem: an inadequate number of AI chips and chipmaking facilities.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, he\u2019s seeking to raise large sums from wealthy investors around the world for a project that would boost production of AI chips. The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, speaking to unnamed sources, reported<\/a> this week that Altman wants $5 trillion to $7 trillion for the project, in which OpenAI, investors, chipmakers, and power suppliers would team up to build chip foundries.<\/p>\n

The amount dwarfs, as the Journal<\/em> notes, the size of today\u2019s global semiconductor industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sam Lessin, a Silicon Valley investor and early Facebook<\/a> executive\u2014he\u2019s running for a slot on the Harvard Board of Overseers, an effort backed by<\/a> Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a former Harvard classmate\u2014mused about the fundraising in an X<\/a> post<\/a> on Friday entitled \u201cThe Era of Absurdist Capitalism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When trillions are being sought in a fundraise, Lessin wrote, \u201cyou have to question what has happened to society\/our system.\u201d<\/p>\n

He brought up Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla<\/a> and SpaceX<\/a>, writing: \u201cI don\u2019t grudge Sam\u2019s showmanship in and of itself\u2014he is just extending the game Elon has played with \u2018self-driving cars around the corner\u2019 or \u2018Mars by 2024.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2020, Musk said<\/a> that SpaceX\u2019s first crewed Mars mission could launch as early as 2024. Two years later he pushed that back to 2029.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam is just playing a game of one-upmanship,\u201d Lessin wrote. \u201cStarting with fear-mongering AGI, and when that runs out\u2026let\u2019s come up with the biggest number we can think of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

AGI stands for artificial general intelligence, a hypothetical type of AI that can do any task a human can. Altman spent much of last year warning world leaders and others about the dangers of AGI, an exercise that also helped turbocharge interest in OpenAI\u2019s products. The Financial Times<\/em> reported<\/a> this week that OpenAI\u2019s revenues have surpassed $2 billion on an annualized basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The danger, Lessin suggested, is that capitalism, rather than being the invisible hand that guides us, \u201cbecomes a game of \u2018absurdities\u2019 vs. discipline.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
