For the more buttoned-up leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/19\/goldman-sachs-ceo-david-solomon-brought-office-working-back-to-pre-pandemic-levels\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">David Solomon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/11\/jpmorgan-ceo-jamie-dimon-scolds-managers-work-from-home-accessible-leader\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Jamie Dimon<\/a>, any amount of remote work is an aberration, a distraction, and an excuse for workers to slack off\u2014because they\u2019re evading the watchful eye of a manager who would keep them in line.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Then there are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/16\/mark-zuckerberg-versus-brian-chesky-pandemic-ceo-culture-split\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">the more lenient sorts<\/a>\u2014such as the leadership team of Australian software giant <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/atlassian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Atlassian<\/a>, which steadfastly encourages a work-from-anywhere policy. In other words, it\u2019s a \u201cdistributed work\u201d model, which emphasizes how work happens, not where.\u00a0They officially rolled out the program just shy of three years ago, publishing a retrospective report this week titled \u201cLessons Learned: 1,000 Days of Distributed at Atlassian,\u201d which outlined the firm\u2019s key learnings and contextualized them against the larger public sentiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the report, Atlassian\u2019s data team surveyed 5,000 internal employees about their feelings on the distributed plan and then worked outward, surveying 100 Fortune 1000 CEOs and 100 Fortune 500 CEOs. (While 200 is a small sample size, there are very few executive roles in those companies, making Atlassian\u2019s representation fairly close to capturing that specific pool.)<\/p>\n<p>Atlassian employees are big proponents of the distributed plan. Nearly all (92%) of the 5,000 respondents said the policy (zero mandated in-office days) is integral to their ability to carry out their best work, and 91% say it\u2019s a banner reason that they\u2019re staying at the firm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CEOs aren\u2019t far behind. Nearly all (99%) of the chief executives Atlassian surveyed said they believe that distributed work is the way of the future, and it\u2019s only going to grow in popularity from here. That\u2019s hardly a new feeling\u2014and hardly a baseless prediction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The data, certainly since the onset of the pandemic, has shown that in-person work rates <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/13\/managers-scapegoating-workers-return-to-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">have stabilized<\/a> at just shy of 50% in the top 10 metro areas in the U.S. Most workers have made themselves clear: Full-time in-person work is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/31\/commuting-yearly-costs-time-more-expensive\/#:~:text=Remote%20workers%20spend%20half%20the,month%20when%20working%20from%20home.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">no longer compatible<\/a> with their lifestyle, and it\u2019s also not necessary for them to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/09\/commuting-time-factor-employees-think-more-productive-when-working-from-home\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">produce their best work<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bosses might (finally) be agreeing with them. Per Atlassian\u2019s research, 1 in 3 Fortune 500 and 1000 bosses whose companies mandate some amount of in-person work say that the rule hasn\u2019t impacted productivity at all. Those same executives were three times as likely to say that how their people work is more important than where they work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly what Atlassian has done\u2014and, as they\u2019ve stressed in the report, new data always guides their decision-making.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Team Anywhere wins again<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The plan\u2019s popularity comes as no surprise to Annie Dean, the head of Atlassian\u2019s distributed work research arm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/practices\/use-cases\/team-anywhere\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Team Anywhere<\/a>, and a longtime flexible work evangelist. As Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/20\/hybrid-work-problems-annie-dean-meta-atlassian\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">told <em>Fortune<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>last year, companies who steadfastly refuse to meet workers where they\u2019re at with regard to work location will undoubtedly suffer the consequences. Namely: dampened morale, untenable churn, and worsened productivity to boot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vev.design\/private\/yCsFARbVr4ZmPWCTEdum1zkj9uE2\/vhdl-Dropbox-EI_US-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">recent report<\/a> from think tank Economist Impact found that workers don\u2019t actually lose focus when they go remote\u2014it\u2019s really when they <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/25\/remote-work-could-make-economy-more-productive\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">feel they\u2019ve lost autonomy<\/a> or have to grapple with \u201ca weak infrastructure for a thriving workplace.\u201d Time and time again, data proves that workers simply <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/21\/slack-ceo-stewart-butterfield-return-to-office-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">don\u2019t like being told what to do<\/a>, and will resent feeling forced into an office needlessly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even part-time in-office arrangements are a policy failure, Dean explained, which might be a blow to bosses who think they\u2019re offering a compromise in the form of a hybrid plan. \u201cHybrid is an illusion of choice,\u201d she said.
