If you\u2019ve ever dabbled with a Rubik\u2019s Cube, you know it isn\u2019t the easiest puzzle to crack. But despite the challenging nature of the game, it\u2019s endured longer than most other toys of its generation\u2014think Tamagotchis and Game Boys.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Cube has seen enormous growth and success in its relatively long lifespan in the world of games, selling roughly 500 million units as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year since architecture professor Erno Rubik discovered it\u2014something he says has defied his expectations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a curious fact\u2014one that surprises me as much as anyone\u2014that for so many decades, during a time of an unprecedented technology revolution, fascination with such a simple, \u2018low-tech\u2019 object has survived. And, in fact, this fascination has evolved,\u201d Rubik wrote in his book Cubed, <\/em>published in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How Rubix\u2019s Cube cracked the code for success<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Hungarian professor founded the colorful Cube\u2014whose basic configuration involves a three-dimensional 3\u00d73 grid that\u2019s twisted and turned so each of its surfaces has the same color\u2014in 1974, when he was just 29. <\/p>\n

Rubik, now 79 years old, always had a proclivity for puzzles, and his academic background in art and sculpting became helpful instruments in creating the first prototype of the Cube we know today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI got an interest from [a] young age about problem-solving, challenges, chess problems and so on,\u201d Rubik told Fortune<\/em> in an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although he had created something that intrigued him, he couldn\u2019t solve it for a month. <\/p>\n

But once he did, it marked the beginning of the Cube\u2019s journey\u2014first, to shops in Hungary and soon after, the rest of the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, it was important to prove to myself that it\u2019s possible to solve. So, I thought well, if I can do it, somebody else can,\u201d Rubik said, referring to the Cube philosophically as a reflection of life itself. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is, how do you find your way between so many possible positions and how can you find your way back?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The complexity and paradoxical nature of the Cube<\/a> makes it more than just a game (that was solved by a 21-year-old in a record time of 3.13 seconds<\/a> last year). <\/p>\n

The Cube\u2019s earliest boost in sales came in the 1980s, when Rubik took his creation to a fair in New York\u2014in the three years that followed, roughly 100 million<\/a> Cubes were sold, creating a frenzy that Rubik had never expected or seen before.<\/p>\n

Rubik describes the Cube as a tool that\u2019s helped him understand people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other academics also regarded it as such, including cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter, who wrote of the Cube in 1981<\/a> that \u201cit is an ingenious mechanical invention, a pastime, a learning tool, a source of metaphors, an inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

With 43 quintillion solutions for the Cube, it can initially feel like an impossible task to tackle. But the Cube\u2019s ability to confound people is also what\u2019s drawn enthusiasts over the years, creating an entire universe of its own. <\/p>\n

People have now solved the Cube blindfolded<\/a>, competed in international championships for it, used it to demonstrate AI breakthroughs<\/a> and much more. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s also earned a spot in pop culture, from featuring in a Spice Girls music video to appearing in Will Smith\u2019s The Pursuit of Happyness.<\/em> <\/p>\n

All that has helped keep the Rubik\u2019s Cube fresh in people\u2019s minds. <\/p>\n
