(This time last year, \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water\u201d was inundating theaters.) Instead, a wide array of films \u2013 among them \u201cAquaman and the Lost Kingdom,\u201d \u201cThe Boys in the Boat,\u201d \u201cMigration,\u201d \u201cFerrari,\u201d \u201cThe Iron Claw\u201d and \u201cAnyone But You\u201d \u2013 sought to break out over the year\u2019s most lucrative box-office corridor.<\/p>\n<p>The top choice, though,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/film-box-office-wonka-movie-28aa01dfdd429efab49b32a1ab87cb40\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">remained \u201cWonka,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Paul King\u2019s musical starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka. In its third weekend, the Warner Bros. release collected an estimated $24 million Friday through Sunday and $31.8 million factoring in estimates for the Monday holiday. That brings the film\u2019s domestical total to $142.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>That bested Warner Bros.\u2019 own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/aquaman-lost-kingdom-movie-review-28e3cae57ba9ffefa70fbfc909c3d7f1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cAquaman and the Lost Kingdom,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which, like previous DC superhero films, is struggling. James Wan\u2019s \u201cAquaman\u201d sequel starring Jason Momoa took in $19.5 million in its second weekend to bring its two-week haul to a modest $84.7 million including New Year\u2019s Day estimates.<\/p>\n<p>The original \u201cAquaman,\u201d which ultimately surpassed $1.1 billion worldwide, had grossed $215.4 million over a similar period in 2018 \u2013 more than double that of the sequel. Internationally, \u201cAquaman and the Lost Kingdom\u201d added $50.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Weekend sales only tell part of the story this time of year. From Christmas through New Year\u2019s, when kids are out of school and many adults aren\u2019t working, every day is like Saturday to film distributors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Color Purple,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/color-purple-film-21c75312a55f8e001a5c1c5947c09bdd\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Blitz Bazawule\u2019s adaptation of the 2005 stage musical<\/a>\u00a0from Alice Walker\u2019s novel, debuted on Monday and led all movies on Christmas with $18 million. Through the week, the Warner Bros. release has grossed $50 million, including $13 million Friday through Sunday. That\u2019s a strong start for the crowd-pleaser starring Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks. Audiences gave it an \u201cA\u201d CinemaScore.<\/p>\n<p>The roughly $100 million production, which boasts Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones (all from the 1985 film) as producers, should play well through awards season. It\u2019s nominated for several Golden Globes and expected to be in the Oscar mix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw this opportunity to go wide at Christmas since there were so few movies and we were confident the movie would be well received,\u201d said Jeffrey Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros. \u201cGoing into the competitive landscape that\u2019s so thin in January and February, the excitement of awards season could really help ignite a bigger box office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite a blockbuster-less holiday frame, the last weekend of the year pushed the industry past $9 billion in box office for the year in U.S. and Canadian theaters for the first time since before the pandemic. Ticket sales on the year were up 21% from 2022, according to data firm Comscore.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it was a mark that seemed more easily within reach during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/barbie-oppenheimer-barbenheimer-box-office-d07dce60b4726b2c168c228e1a405c70\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">the summer highs of Barbenheimer<\/a>\u00a0when both \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cOppenheimer\u201d were breaking box-office records.<\/p>\n<p>The enormous success of those two films changed the trajectory of Hollywood\u2019s 2023, but so did the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/hollywood-strikes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">monthslong actors and writers strikes<\/a>. Those forced the postponement of some top films (most notably\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dune-part-two-delay-actors-strike-58d57c14855b931150601d0221b7449e\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cDune: Part Two\u201d<\/a>\u00a0), diminishing an already patchwork fall lineup with few guaranteed ticket-sellers. One exception was the last-minute addition of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/box-office-taylor-swift-eras-tour-877b1d546121d130a174bf1c45513cef\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cTaylor Swift: The Eras Tour,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which set a new record for concert films.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Hollywood needed Swift and every penny to reach $9 billion. It crossed that threshold Saturday, with one day to spare. That total, though, still doesn\u2019t come close to the $11 billion-plus years that preceded the pandemic. The number of wide releases in 2023 came about 20 films shy of those released in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The production delays caused by the strikes could have an even greater impact on 2024. Several top releases have already been postponed until at least the following year, including \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d and \u201cSpider-Verse\u201d sequels. After a rocky year for Marvel and a string of less predictable hits, Hollywood will have to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2023-box-office-trends-933312ca505200e8b73808592f89ca68\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">hope it can adapt to changing audience tastes<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and that another \u201cBarbie\u201d is lurking somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an $11 billion business. We\u2019re climbing our way back,\u201d said Goldstein. \u201cThis next year is going to be a big challenge because of the strikes. But we\u2019re seeing very clearly in 2023, when there are movies out there that people want to see, they come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a host of releases sought to capitalize over the holidays \u2013 and most succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crop of seven wide releases at the end of the year, they got us over the hump of $9 billion,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. \u201cThis final push of the year provided great insight into what audiences are looking for. It\u2019s movies big and small. It\u2019s different types of movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though \u201cWonka\u201d won out as the family movie choice for the holidays, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/universal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Universal<\/a> Pictures\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/migration-film-review-9b4dcfd45eaf5085e19995234800bf34#:~:text=%E2%80%9CMigration%E2%80%9D%20is%20vividly%20animated%20with,like%20Mack%20can%20actually%20fly.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cMigration\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is attracting young audiences, too. The animated movie from \u201cMinions\u201d-maker Illumination notched $17.2 million in 3,839 theaters in its second weekend, and $59.4 million since opening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/movie-review-boys-boat-george-clooney-c6d97f588c8c484d342727958ae37701\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cThe Boys in the Boat,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the George Clooney-directed sports drama, grossed $24.6 million since opening Dec. 25. The <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Amazon<\/a> MGM Studios release, about the U.S. men\u2019s crew in the 1936 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/olympic-steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Olympics<\/a> in Berlin, wasn\u2019t a smash with critics (58% \u201cfresh\u201d on Rotten Tomatoes) but audiences gave it an \u201cA\u201d CinemaScore. \u201cThe Boys in the Boat,\u201d which cost about $40 million to make, could hold well in coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Though romantic comedies have largely migrated to streaming platforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sony-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Sony<\/a> Pictures\u2019 \u201cAnyone But You\u201d is proving the genre can still work in theaters. The film, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, collected $9 million in its second weekend to bring its total to $27.6 million through Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Sean Durkin\u2019s wrestling drama\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/movie-review-iron-claw-zac-efron-6daf41b5de96e570f7181dc83f636b14\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">\u201cThe Iron Claw\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is also performing well. The A24 film, starring Zac Efron, Holt McCallany and Jeremy Allen White, has grossed $18 million since opening Dec. 22, including $5 million on the three-day weekend. The film dramatizes the tragic story of the Von Erich family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michael-mann-ferrari-4e9f40c52d8c53d4317cf3b30665da3b\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Michael Mann\u2019s \u201cFerrari,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a project the director sought to make for three decades, took in $10.9 million since launching in theaters on Monday, including $4.1 million for the weekend. While that ranks as one of the biggest debuts for indie distributor Neon, it\u2019s nowhere near what a movie that cost close to $100 million to make needs to turn a profit.<\/p>\n<p>The film, starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, has been celebrated by critics, but appears likely to follow Mann\u2019s previous film, 2015\u2019s \u201cBlackhat\u201d ($19.6 million worldwide against a $70 million budget), as a commercial disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
