As Greenpeace activists continued to\u00a0occupy a deep sea mining research ship<\/a>\u00a0in the Pacific Ocean, the mining company responsible for the expedition asked a Dutch court Tuesday to end the protest that it said was costing it $1 million a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The research expedition is being conducted by a subsidiary of The Metals Company (TMC), a\u00a0Canadian-registered firm<\/a>\u00a0that next year plans to apply for the world\u2019s first license to mine the deep sea for valuable minerals in international waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With opposition to mining\u00a0biodiverse deep sea ecosystems<\/a>\u00a0growing, Greenpeace International dispatched its ship the\u00a0Arctic Sunrise<\/em>\u00a0to intercept the TMC-chartered vessel, the\u00a0MV Coco<\/em>. On Saturday, Greenpeace activists boarded the\u00a0Coco<\/em>\u00a0and climbed a winch used to lower equipment to the ocean.\u00a0As of Tuesday, two activists were onboard the ship and Greenpeace said they would remain until TMC called off the expedition.<\/p>\n

Greenpeace is registered in the Netherlands, and at a hearing in Amsterdam District Court on Tuesday, attorneys for TMC\u2019s subsidiary asked a judge to order the activists to stand down and fine Greenpeace up \u20ac50,000 ($55,000) for each hour it does not comply. Scientists aboard the\u00a0Coco<\/em>\u00a0have been gathering data on the impact of a test mining operation TMC conducted in 2022 at a site in the Pacific between Mexico and Hawaii. In its legal complaint, TMC said Greenpeace was deliberately obstructing its research and putting the activists\u2019 safety at risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Attorneys for Greenpeace argued in its response that it was conducting a peaceful protest protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. They noted that the activists who boarded the\u00a0Coco<\/em>\u00a0are \u201chighly experienced climbers\u201d and had trained for months for the mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the importance of peaceful activism and bearing witness to an industry that has always operated in the shadows,\u201d Greenpeace deep sea mining campaigner Louisa Casson said from the\u00a0Arctic Sunrise<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A ruling is expected Thursday. \u201cWe have full faith in the Dutch courts to appropriately adjudicate on this matter, and feel confident after our day in court today,\u201d a TMC spokesperson said in an email.\u00a0TMC is among a handful of companies looking to extract polymetallic nodules \u2014 which contain minerals used in electric car batteries \u2014\u00a0from the deep sea.<\/p>\n

Late Monday, International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretary-General\u00a0Michael Lodge<\/a>\u00a0sent a letter to Greenpeace Executive Director Mads Christensen calling on the activists to cease their occupation of the\u00a0Coco<\/em>. The ISA is the United Nations-affiliated organization that governs deep sea mining but has\u00a0yet to adopt regulations<\/a>\u00a0permitting exploitation to proceed.<\/p>\n

Lodge said he was acting under ISA regulations in response to a request from TMC \u201cin the light of immediate and urgent threat of serious harm to the marine environment and the safety of life at sea.\u201d Lodge also told Christensen that he was calling on the Dutch government to consider taking action against Greenpeace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Casson said the ISA\u2019s intervention showed that\u00a0\u201cthe cozy ties between the so-called regulator and the industry are now abundantly clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
