Today marks the release of the PlayStation Portal<\/a>, Sony\u2019s $200 remote player specifically built to accommodate players looking to enjoy their existing PS5 console and its library of games at home but while away from your main gaming display.<\/p>\n By any measure, the PlayStation Portal is a very targeted and specific-use product, and it\u2019s worth clarifying out of the gate: This is not a standalone console in any way. Rather, the Portal allows you to connect to a PS5 you already have in your home over your Wi-Fi network (or any Wi-Fi network)\u00a0and play the games you have downloaded on that PS5 from other places around your home. You can also connect the Portal to other WiFi networks outside of your home, though our testing found inconsistent results when doing so. Regardless of where you connect from, remote play of this nature is not a new capability. For some time, you\u2019ve been able to use existing devices like a smartphone to do the same, and if you have chosen to invest in a good connected controller interface (we\u2019ve previously recommended the Backbone<\/a>), you can already do much of what the Portal is offering.<\/p>\n So, who is this product for, exactly? And why might it be worth a buy?<\/p>\n
