Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is among the world\u2019s wealthiest individuals, with a net worth topping $100 billion. While a number of factors explain his success, one might simply be his optimistic nature.<\/p>\n

The Facebook<\/a> cofounder delved into his views on optimism\u2014and just as important, pessimism\u2014on a Monday episode<\/a> of the Huberman Lab<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

One of his favorite sayings, he explained, is that \u201coptimists tend to be successful and pessimists tend to be right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI do think that there\u2019s really something to it\u2026If you\u2019re discussing any idea, there\u2019s all these reasons why it might not work. And those reasons are probably true. The people who are stating them probably have some validity\u2026But the question is, is that the most productive way to view the world? Across the board, I think the people who tend to be the most productive and get the most done\u2014you kind of need to be optimistic, because if you don\u2019t believe that something can get done, then why would you go work on it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg, who considers himself an optimist, certainly believed that Facebook, which he cofounded nearly 20 years ago, would catch on. But he also heard plenty of criticism from doubters who couldn\u2019t imagine it taking off. Among the doubters was investor Andrew Chen, currently a partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Chen met the Facebook team when it consisted of about 12 people. He wasn\u2019t very impressed and passed on what would have been a blockbuster investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t know much about advertising,\u201d Chen later wrote<\/a>. \u201cTheir monetization strategy seemed superficial at best.\u201d The idea that Facebook would one day be bigger than portals like Yahoo<\/a>, MSN, and AOL \u201cnever crossed my mind,\u201d he added, admitting to his \u201cfailure to understand Facebook\u2019s potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg, of course, remained optimistic\u2014and the rest is history.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s remained similarly optimistic about the potential of the metaverse, despite investors getting nervous<\/a> about Meta spending tens of billions on the project with little to show for it. \u201cThose who are patient and invest with us will end up being rewarded,\u201d he insisted<\/a> on an analyst call last year.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been consistently upbeat about the potential of artificial intelligence to improve people\u2019s lives, as well, whereas Tesla<\/a> CEO Elon Musk has described<\/a> AI as a \u201cfundamental risk to the existence of human civilization.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWith AI especially, I am really optimistic,\u201d Zuckerberg said<\/a> in a Facebook livestream in 2017. \u201cAnd I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios\u2014I just, I don\u2019t understand it. It\u2019s really negative, and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible. In the next five to 10 years, AI is going to deliver so many improvements in the quality of our lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, many would argue Zuckerberg has been too optimistic in some regards, with Facebook in many eyes becoming a cesspool of disinformation and conspiracies. The company has repeatedly been accused of privacy violations, including during the Cambridge Analytica scandal<\/a>. Being a bit more pessimistic could have saved Zuckerberg a lot of trouble, it would seem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That said, he is not one to filter out criticism. \u201cIf you tune out everyone who thinks that you\u2019re not doing something right, then you\u2019re going to miss a lot of really valuable signals to do stuff better than you\u2019re doing it today,\u201d he told<\/a> The Verge last year.<\/p>\n

Also on the podcast was Zuckerberg\u2019s wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, with whom he cofounded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The organization, fittingly, has the optimistic goal to cure all human diseases by the end of this century, with a focus on funding projects at the intersections of biology, engineering, and AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI will say that we are incredibly hopeful people,\u201d said Chan. \u201cBut it manifests in different ways between the two of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg suggested he was more \u201ctechnologically optimistic about what can be built,\u201d while for Chan as a doctor it was more about \u201cbeing able to improve the lives of individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chan agreed with that, but also described one downside of her husband\u2019s optimism in day-to-day life:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs life partners, our relative optimism comes through as, Mark just is overly optimistic about his time management and will get engrossed in interesting ideas. And he\u2019s late. I have to channel \u2018Mark is an optimist\u2019 whenever I\u2019m waiting for him\u2026His optimism translates to some tardiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
