I know it\u2019s not an exciting topic, but it\u2019s the one thing I won\u2019t leave home without.<\/p>\n<p>Travel insurance has saved me \u2014 and my readers \u2014 time and time again. I\u2019ve had my gear broken and stolen, missed flights, needed doctor\u2019s appointments, and even needed urgent medical care abroad.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned the hard way how vital it is \u2014 especially as a budget traveler.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, these days, many credit cards come with travel insurance. And while I always recommend that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/travel-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get comprehensive travel insurance<\/a> in addition, there are a number of cards out that offer pretty robust protection at no additional cost.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking about getting a new credit card, or if you want to know which of your current ones you can rely on for decent insurance, here\u2019s a list of the best credit cards with travel insurance:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"how-credit-card-travel-insurance-works\">How Credit Card Travel Insurance Works <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Travel protection offered by credit cards does not cost anything extra, although nearly all of the cards that offer such insurance \u2014 with one notable exception (see below) \u2014 come with an annual fee.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the many reasons that getting a card with an annual fee is worth it (and why I think that avoiding cards with annual fees is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/travel-hacking-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biggest mistakes you can make when using credit cards for travel<\/a>). If something goes wrong while you\u2019re on the road and your card\u2019s insurance pays for it, you\u2019ll more than recoup the annual fee right there.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing to know is that for the insurance to kick in, you must have paid for your trip using that card. However, once you do that, you\u2019ll be covered.<\/p>\n<p>While the payout limits vary greatly, as do the conditions that need to be met before coverage kicks in, these are general categories that credit card travel insurance usually covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trip delay:<\/strong> covers meals, lodging, and other expenses if your trip is delayed at least six hours (for some cards, it must be at least 12)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trip cancelation and interruption:<\/strong> reimburses trip costs if a covered reason (such as death in the family) causes you to cancel your trip or go home early<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rental car insurance:<\/strong> in the event of an accident, covers damage to the car; injuries are not covered (primary insurance kicks in before any other insurance, while if the card offers secondary insurance, you\u2019ll have to file with your own car insurance first)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Baggage:<\/strong> covers delay of, loss of, or damage to your baggage<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accident insurance:<\/strong> in the case of death or dismemberment, you or your beneficiaries will receive a payout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these are categories that credit cards with the best travel insurance generally include, always read the fine print of your coverage no matter what. There\u2019s a lot in there that can change what you\u2019re eligible for, such as what state you live in, the length of your trip, and more.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here are the best credit cards for travel insurance and what they cover:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"my-top-pick-chase-sapphire-reservereg\">MY TOP PICK: Chase Sapphire Reserve\u00ae<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"alignright sh-quidget-markup lazyload\" alt=\"card_name\" width=\"289\" height=\"181\" data-rate-name=\"Chase Sapphire Reserve(R)\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*4048084*,*field*:*LogoImageUrl*,*api*:*cc*}\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomadicmatt.com\/travel-blogs\/best-premium-travel-credit-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">premium rewards card<\/a>. It offers the most comprehensive travel insurance out of any credit card and is one of the only ones to include any kind of medical insurance. The Reserve also offers airport lounge access, a fantastic roster of transfer partners, and an array of statement credits, including a $300 USD annual travel credit that brings the annual $550 USD fee down to a more reasonable $250 USD.<\/p>\n<p>As a Visa Infinite\u00ae card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve\u2019s travel insurance includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary car rental insurance up to $75,000 USD<\/li>\n<li>Travel accident insurance up to $1,000,000 USD<\/li>\n<li>Trip cancelation\/interruption coverage up to $10,000 USD per person and $20,000 USD per trip<\/li>\n<li>Trip delay coverage of $500 USD after delays of six hours or more<\/li>\n<li>Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD<\/li>\n<li>$100 per day for up to five days if your baggage is delayed<\/li>\n<li>Emergency medical and dental coverage up to $2,500 USD for treatment (minus a $50 USD deductible)<\/li>\n<li>Emergency evacuation insurance up to $100,000 USD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><a class=\"bookhostel sh-quidget-markup\" data-rate-name=\"Chase Sapphire Reserve(R)\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*4048084*,*field*:*LinkTagPDPUrl*,*api*:*cc*,*linkText*:*Learn more*,*linkTarget*:*_blank*,*linkRel*:*sponsored*}\">Learn more<\/a><\/center>If you don\u2019t want to pay the high annual fee for the Reserve, the <a class=\"sh-quidget-markup\" data-rate-name=\"Chase Sapphire Preferred(R) Card\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*2061159*,*field*:*LinkTagPDPUrl*,*api*:*cc*,*linkText*:*card_name*,*linkTarget*:*_blank*,*linkRel*:*sponsored*}\">card_name<\/a> offers most of the same benefits for a much lower one ($95 USD). Just note that the Preferred comes with lower payouts and more restrictions (for example, trip delay coverage doesn\u2019t kick in until a delay of at least 12 hours). Emergency medical and evacuation insurance also isn\u2019t covered on the Preferred.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if you\u2019re eligible for a business card, the <a class=\"sh-quidget-markup\" data-rate-name=\"Ink Business Preferred(R) Credit Card\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*3006145*,*field*:*LinkTagPDPUrl*,*api*:*cc*,*linkText*:*card_name*,*linkTarget*:*_blank*,*linkRel*:*sponsored*}\">card_name<\/a> has the almost the same coverage as the Chase Sapphire Preferred.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"capital-one-venture-x\">Capital One Venture X <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignright sh-quidget-markup lazyload\" alt=\"card_name\" width=\"289\" height=\"181\" data-rate-name=\"Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*4048272*,*field*:*LogoImageUrl*,*api*:*cc*}\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, Capital One overhauled its cards, and the Capital One Venture X now competes with the top brands, including some of the best travel protection around. You\u2019ll also get a generous welcome offer, lounge access, travel credits, and a solid points-earning structure. It also offers the best travel insurance you can get on a card with no annual fee.<\/p>\n<p>Since Bilt is a World Elite Mastercard, you\u2019ll get access to that suite of travel insurance benefits. Notably, it doesn\u2019t have accident insurance or medical coverage, so if you\u2019re relying on Bilt for that, you\u2019ll want to purchase additional travel insurance that does.<\/p>\n<p>Bilt\u2019s travel insurance includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary car rental insurance up to $50,000 USD (secondary for New York State residents when renting within the US)<\/li>\n<li>Trip cancelation and interruption coverage up to $5,000 USD<\/li>\n<li>Trip delay coverage (after a delay of six hours) of $200 USD per day, up to $1,800 USD<\/li>\n<li>Cell phone protection up to $800 USD minus a $25 USD deductible (cracked screens not included)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><a class=\"bookhostel\" href=\"https:\/\/blit-rewards.sjv.io\/c\/214481\/1658382\/19013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more<\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"the-platinum-card-from-american-express\">The Platinum Card from American Express <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright sh-quidget-markup lazyload\" alt=\"card_name\" width=\"289\" height=\"181\" data-rate-name=\"The Platinum Card(R) from American Express\" data-content=\"{*credit_card_id*:*4028089*,*field*:*LogoImageUrl*,*api*:*cc*}\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At $695 USD per year, the Platinum Card from American Express has the highest annual fee of any consumer travel card out there, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily translate to better benefits across the board. While the Platinum does offer great travel insurance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve handily beats it in all categories.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Platinum offers emergency evacuation and medical transport coverage (with no limit on cost), which can be huge if you end up needing to take advantage of it. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/index.html?aid=362916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Booking.com<\/a> as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t Forget Travel Insurance<\/strong><br \/>\nTravel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It\u2019s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I\u2019ve had to use it many times in the past.
