\u201cThe rich aren\u2019t particularly happy either,\u201d Menlo Ventures partner and prolific poster Deedy Das wrote on X<\/a> in May. By his own \u201cback of the envelope\u201d estimate, roughly 10,000 people\u2014employees at Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Nvidia<\/a> and Meta<\/a>, plus founders\u2014have built fortunes well above $20 million in the past five years. Many of those who have \u201cmade it,\u201d he added, feel \u201ca profound lack of purpose.\u201d (Menlo Ventures is an investor in Anthropic.)<\/p>\n

\n

Bay Area therapists coined a term for that feeling during the dot-com boom of the 1990s\u2014\u201csudden wealth syndrome\u201d<\/a>\u2014and they say the syndrome is back in the wake of the AI windfall.<\/p>\n

Joan DiFuria and Stephen Goldbart founded the Money, Meaning & Choices Institute in the 1990s to treat people struggling with a sudden influx of wealth from the first internet gold rush. They recently spoke to The Cut<\/em><\/a> about the syndrome\u2019s AI-fueled resurgence.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sudden wealth syndrome 2.0\u2019<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sudden wealth syndrome 2.0,\u201d DiFuria said. \u201cAll these people coming out of the AI boom are experiencing wealth on a different level, and having more complex emotions about it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately for the afflicted, there\u2019s an industry for that. TIGER 21<\/a>, a peer group whose members meet for a full day each month, requires at least $20 million in investable assets or qualifying net worth to join. Paracelsus Recovery<\/a>, a residential clinic in Zurich that provides a private chef, a driver and a live-in therapist, charges about \u00a3100,000\u2014roughly $131,000\u2014a week. And one health care consultancy that finds doctors and mental health care for wealthy families charges retainers starting at $30,000 for 50 hours.<\/p>\n

What differentiates this wave of sudden wealth syndrome from the dot-com era, DiFuria said, is that people are making money from a technology many consider destructive\u2014including some of the people building it. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re already feeling anxious about your wealth and the whole world is saying, \u2018What you\u2019re doing is going to kill me or take my job,\u2019 how do you speak to your friends?\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really next level from what we\u2019ve seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

A windfall measured in trillions<\/h3>\n

Fortune<\/em> reported in August 2025<\/a> that there were 498 AI unicorns\u2014private AI companies valued at $1 billion or more\u2014with a combined value of $2.7 trillion, according to CB Insights. The Wall Street Journal reported in May<\/a> that more than 600 current and former OpenAI employees sold a collective $6.6 billion in shares in an October 2025 tender offer<\/a>; about 75 of them sold the maximum allowed and walked away with $30 million each. And Forbes counted at least 86 AI billionaires<\/a> worth a combined $2.9 trillion on its 2026 list in March, 45 of whom were newcomers.<\/p>\n

The ultra-wealthy may have more peers than ever before, but DiFuria and Goldbart said many of them feel cut off.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt creates social isolation. People who have derived wealth from AI, they very much have their own subculture,\u201d Goldbart said.<\/p>\n

\u2018The rich people up on the hill\u2019<\/h3>\n

Billionaires today have enclaves in places like Lake Tahoe and Hawaii, compounds where each relative gets a separate house and pool. <\/p>\n

The world\u2019s highest-profile tech billionaires offer the most conspicuous examples. Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s Kauai compound, which Wired estimated would cost about $270 million including the land, includes a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter<\/a> that he has described as \u201cjust like a little shelter.\u201d Jeff Bezos has spent about $237 million on three properties on Indian Creek<\/a>, a man-made island in Miami-Dade County nicknamed \u201cBillionaire Bunker,\u201d with its own police department and a gated bridge.<\/p>\n

Goldbart called the trend a \u201cmajor social problem\u201d and said that society is \u201cdrifting toward a great imbalance between the haves and have-nots, with the rich people up on the hill, cut off from everybody else below them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The effects are intergenerational. \u201cPeople are raising children who have barely ever left the house,\u201d DiFuria said. \u201cThey don\u2019t know what a poor person looks like.\u201d Fortune<\/em> recently reported<\/a> on wealthy parents\u2019 growing fear that their fortunes will sap their children\u2019s drive.<\/p>\n

\u2018We found our people\u2019<\/h3>\n

Goldbart and DiFuria said they try to push clients the other way. In a first meeting that often runs about six hours, they ask clients to craft a \u201cset of operational values\u201d and set concrete goals, such as volunteering or donating some of their money\u2014a path some AI leaders have publicly pledged to take<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But they acknowledged that the people who are most cut off are unlikely to seek them out.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur clients are self-selecting,\u201d Goldbart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people with narcissism are not going to come to ask us questions about values or purpose,\u201d DiFuria said.<\/p>\n

Some clients also choose to self-isolate regardless. DiFuria described a billionaire family that went from feeling guilty about their spending to owning yachts and planes and moving to an area where other billionaires live.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found our people,\u201d she said the family told her. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to be embarrassed or hide the fact that we have a plane and a yacht and five homes. We can finally be open about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
