Elon Musk has perhaps been the most bullish on AI\u2019s potential to reshape the world, predicting that work will eventually become optional, goods and services will become abundant, and money could become irrelevant<\/a> as AI drives toward a \u201cuniversal high income<\/a>.\u201d But fellow billionaire Michael Saylor<\/a> isn\u2019t quite buying it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody doesn\u2019t get a Hampton\u2019s house. Everybody doesn\u2019t get their own private jet. They don\u2019t get their own private yacht,\u201d Saylor said in a Diary of a CEO<\/em> interview published<\/a> last week after being asked by host Steven Bartlett<\/a> if he agreed with Musk\u2019s AI predictions.<\/p>\n

While Saylor\u2014founder of software firm Strategy, which has made Bitcoin central to its business<\/a>\u2014agreed that AI could make life\u2019s necessities dramatically cheaper, or even free, the 61-year-old argued it won\u2019t eliminate money\u2019s value altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As basic goods become abundant, he said, people will simply shift their spending toward scarcer goods that confer wealth and status.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I give you universal healthcare, people want private healthcare. If I give everybody a house, someone\u2019s going to want a house twice as big,\u201d Saylor, who has a net worth<\/a> of $3.3 billion, said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s always going to have a reason to want something more because we\u2019re status-oriented animals. That\u2019s the cynical way to look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Technology has made kings\u2019 luxuries commonplace, according to Saylor\u2014and AI could soon do the same again<\/h2>\n

History, Saylor suggested, offers some evidence to his argument. Technological advances have made many necessities dramatically cheaper and more widely available. Clean water and advanced medicine, for example, are now commonplace across much of the developed world despite once being a luxury even kings and queens couldn\u2019t reliably access.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHenry VII didn\u2019t have dental crowns. He didn\u2019t have X-rays,\u201d Saylor said. \u201c[We] get modern medical care. The infant mortality rate has plunged. Life is safer. Clean water, clean air, right, clean food\u2014and technology gave them to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that abundance, he argued, doesn\u2019t eliminate the desire for something for something better\u2014rather, it raises the baseline for what people consider luxury.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened with the explosion of affluence? Massive utilitarian entitlement,\u201d Saylor said. \u201cEverybody gets a car, but how many people get a Porsche? What happens with humanity is we always invent the luxury car\u2014we come up with the trophy asset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Modern food consumption is also a good example of how abundance doesn\u2019t necessarily eliminate the desire for luxury.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn New York City, you can see that everywhere\u2014why do we go to restaurants and pay $300 to eat at a restaurant because you can actually feed yourself on three bucks a day?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silicon Valley leaders agree with Musk and Saylor: AI is poised to unleash an era of abundance<\/h2>\n

While Musk and Saylor disagree over exactly how abundant AI will make the world, they\u2019re not alone in believing the technology could radically reshape the way people live.<\/p>\n

Dennis Hassabis<\/a>, who recently transitioned to chairman of Google Deepmind<\/a>\u2014has similarly predicted an era of unprecedented abundance driven by AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 10, 15 years\u2019 time, we\u2019ll be in a kind of new golden era of discovery that [is] a kind of new renaissance,\u201d Hassabis previously said on Fortune<\/em>\u2019s Titans and Disruptors of Industry podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In that future, he said breakthroughs will occur in medicine and energy\u2014and eventually allow humanity to\u00a0 \u201ctravel the stars and \u2026 explore the galaxy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billionaire venture capitalist Vinod Khosla<\/a> has similarly argued that AI will usher in an era of bountifulness\u2014but said the economic benefits will depend heavily on how governments respond to the resulting job displacement.<\/p>\n

\u201cProductivity will favor increasing average incomes but job displacement will do the reverse even as the goods and services produced increases dramatically,\u201d Khosla wrote<\/a> in 2024. \u201cUniversal<\/a> basic income may be the best equalizer.
