I traveled to Osaka, Japan, to play the game for a few hours and interview the development leads, and one of the more surprising elements of my hands-on time was the lack of puzzle boxes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A staple of all four Onimusha games \u2013 Warlords, Samurai\u2019s Destiny, Demon Siege, and Dawn of Dreams \u2013 they were curiously absent from my three hours of hands-on time with Way of the Sword. When I got the chance to talk to director Satoru Nihei about the game, I had to ask if I had missed any. It turns out, I didn\u2019t \u2013 there just aren\u2019t any in Way of the Sword.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"jlvid_container\"><iframe title=\"Onimusha: Warlords - Trick Treasure Box # 6 - 7 Moves\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4pvOoanTKiA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you observed, it\u2019s not really the same kind of puzzle elements we had like usual, like the puzzle boxes,\u201d Nihei tells me. \u201cAs you observed, we have puzzle elements in the actual stage, and we\u2019ve introduced those as a way to break up the action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Nihei is talking about there is an environmental puzzle I had to solve about halfway through my demo in Dokyo\u2019s underground lab. Hidden beneath the imperial castle in Kyoto, the evil and demented genma Dokyo is concocting new demonic creations by splicing together Genma, humans, animals, and whatever else she\/it can find. This entire stage plays like a classic Japanese ghost house, and I\u2019ll be writing about that in a later feature, but in between the action, I had to pause and solve a puzzle unlike anything in any Onimusha game before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a large kabuki theater-like room, there were four masks adorning the wall before me. It was very clear I needed to interact with them, or use them, to advance forward through the stage, but as much as I circled around the room, I couldn\u2019t find any way to do so \u2013 no switch, no lever, nothing. I won&#8217;t spoil the solution, but it was an interesting use of the game&#8217;s space and visual design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That said, I spent longer than I care to admit solving this puzzle. Shizuka, the mysterious woman who either is protagonist Miyamoto Musashi\u2019s Oni Gauntlet, or at least living inside of it somehow, lightly nudged me in the right direction with helpful and polite tips, and I was able to solve it with her help. Don\u2019t worry: Shizuka wasn\u2019t annoying and I didn\u2019t find her tips to be immersion-breaking or anything like that. It\u2019s the kind of help you want a companion to give and hey \u2013 if you\u2019re still worried about Shizuka\u2019s help, just be smarter than me when you play the game!<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this puzzle probably took me about five minutes to solve, and then boom, I was right back into the sword action that makes up 90% of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. I enjoy a good environmental puzzle, and this one was quite unique. It doubles as a small break from the combat, too, and that\u2019s by design, according to the game\u2019s director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously action is a big focus of the game, but just having action is maybe not so exciting for people,\u201d Nihei says. \u201cSo we\u2019ve introduced these puzzle elements into each stage that can get people thinking in between those action sections.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"jlvid_container\"><iframe title=\"Game Informer - Onimusha: Way of the Sword Cover Trailer\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4ItkEMIC8aU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be diving deeper into Capcom\u2019s return to Onimusha as part of\u00a0<em>Game Informer\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0month of Way of the Sword coverage.
