White-collar workers have fallen into the mundane rhythm of office life: checking an endless stream of emails, sitting through a barrage of meetings, and pushing through mental fatigue by week\u2019s end. <\/p>\n

\n

But some CEOs are rewriting norms of the corporate world, leading billion- and trillion-dollar companies on their own terms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nvidia<\/a> CEO Jensen Huang: no one-on-one meetings<\/h3>\n

Huang, the cofounder and CEO of $4.8 trillion technology giant Nvidia, is trimming the fat from his work routine by prioritizing efficiency over regular check-ins.<\/p>\n

The leader doesn\u2019t believe that <\/a>frequent catch-ups with his 55 direct reports are the best use of his time, given that a continuous stream of meetings would only clog up his work schedule and slow him down.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t do one-on-one\u2019s with any of them,\u201d Huang said at<\/a> the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research summit in 2024.<\/p>\n

His broader goal is to maintain transparency within one of the world\u2019s largest companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never hear me say something to them that is only for them to know,\u201d the billionaire continued. \u201cThere\u2019s not one piece of information that I somehow secretly tell the staff; I don\u2019t tell the rest of the company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Huang still has regular catch-ups with his executive team, and if an employee genuinely needs to get in touch with him, he\u2019ll \u201cdrop everything for them,\u201d the CEO added. However, limiting time-consuming meetings helps Huang and the company move faster in the AI race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn that way, our company was designed for agility,\u201d Huang said. \u201cFor information to flow as quickly as possible. For people to be empowered by what they are able to do, not what they know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Airbnb<\/a> CEO Brian Chesky: no emails or early-morning meetings<\/h3>\n

Chesky said that no leader should apologize for how they choose to run their businesses, and he\u2019s unabashedly following his own advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For one, the chief executive of the $86 billion short-term rental platform no longer bothers with<\/a> the bane of many workers\u2019 existence: emailing. Instead, he texts and calls to get his job done.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Emailing] was the thing about my job that I hated the most before the pandemic,\u201d Chesky told<\/a> The Wall Street Journal <\/em>last year.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not the only corporate norm Chesky has snubbed: the Airbnb CEO, who hits peak creativity late into the night, also doesn\u2019t take meetings before 10 a.m. The rise-and-grind norm of Silicon Valley CEOs doesn\u2019t apply to the self-made billionaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re CEO,\u201d Chesky said, \u201cyou can decide when the first meeting of the day is.\u201d<\/p>\n

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby: office power naps\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Kirby<\/a> said that an impromptu office nap<\/a> is his trick to staying sharp over his decades-long career in business. He even slept on the floor until United staffers found out about his habit, and rushed to get him a couch for some quality shut eye.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The leader says taking a break keeps him fueled to run the $33 billion airline giant\u2014and he picked up on a leadership hack. A \u201cpower nap\u201d of 30 minutes or less boosts alertness and mood, improves mental clarity, and fights off fatigue, according to a 2024 study<\/a> from Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n

\u201cA thing I do that people have thought is weird is that, throughout my whole career, when I\u2019m in the office, I\u2019ll close the door and take a 20-minute nap,\u201d Kirby recently said in an interview with<\/a> McKinsey<\/a> and Company.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I take a 20-minute nap, I\u2019ve accomplished more than anything else I would have accomplished in that time,\u201d the CEO explained. \u201cWhen you\u2019re tired, your brain is not 100%. If you\u2019re not 100%, you shouldn\u2019t be making decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Southwest Airlines<\/a> CEO Bob Jordan: no meetings during afternoons<\/h3>\n

Jordan set a new rule for 2026<\/a>: his calendar will stay completely clear every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon. No meetings are allowed during those hours; the CEO is ensuring that there\u2019s a block to \u201cthink about what\u2019s important right now,\u201d tossing aside traditional duties that can be a total time suck.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you first start, it\u2019s easy to confuse busyness and going to meetings with leadership,\u201d Jordan said at the<\/a> New York Times<\/em> DealBook Summit in 2025. \u201c\u2026Because what we all find, I\u2019m sure, is there\u2019s no time to \u2018work,\u2019 and you confuse going to meetings with the work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jordan said that his boundary might sound \u201ccrazy\u201d to fellow executives dipping in and out of daily meetings. However, the airline giant leader reasoned that CEOs are brought on to do work they\u2019re specifically good at\u2014which usually isn\u2019t getting done during conversations that can eat up valuable time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so that you can work on things you need to work on,\u201d Jordan explained. \u201cYou can think about what\u2019s important right now. You can call people you need to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twilio<\/a> CEO Khozema Shipchandler: exercise between capped meetings<\/h3>\n

Shipchandler is \u201call for working smarter,\u201d so he\u2019s joining the legion of leaders who are being strict about their calendars. Like so many others, he\u2019s selective about what meetings he attends and how long they last\u2014and he uses the spare minutes to get a quick exercise in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not take meetings that I don\u2019t think drive the ball forward for the company, or that don\u2019t bring me energy,\u201d Shipchandler told Fortune<\/em><\/a> last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI typically only do 25-minute meetings in a 30-minute slot, and I only take 50-minute meetings in an hour slot,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd in the time in between, I\u2019ll do maybe a quick lap around the house to get the blood flowing, or get some fresh air.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
