Niklas \u00d6stberg is\u00a0a\u00a0rare beast. A founder-CEO\u00a0who took his company public and survived a shareholder\u00a0backlash. Sam Altman might like to take his number\u00a0as he\u00a0considers\u00a0floating\u00a0OpenAI. Reporting\u00a0on\u00a0your results every three months is not for the faint-hearted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00d6stberg is the entrepreneur behind Delivery Hero<\/a>,\u00a0the\u00a0\u20ac7.65bn\u00a0global food delivery business\u00a0which\u00a0IPO\u2019d\u00a0in 2017.\u00a0It was the largest\u00a0float\u00a0of the year\u00a0on the German stock exchange,\u00a0and\u00a0unlike other, rockier\u00a0food delivery\u00a0debuts\u00a0(Deliveroo, Blue Apron), its\u00a0share\u00a0price rose strongly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was then. Roll forward to\u00a02025\u00a0and it has been far from a good\u00a0year on the markets for the owner of\u00a0Talabat\u00a0(Gulf, North Africa),\u00a0Glovo\u00a0(Europe, Africa) and\u00a0Foodpanda\u00a0(South-east Asia).\u00a0Delivery Hero\u2019s\u00a0share price\u00a0fell to a low of\u00a0\u20ac16.05\u00a0($18.94)\u00a0in November,\u00a0from a high of\u00a0\u20ac31.39\u00a0($37.05)\u00a0nine months earlier,\u00a0a\u00a0nearly 50%\u00a0drop.\u00a0Competition from the Chinese giant,\u00a0Meituan<\/a>, and regulatory fines for poor\u00a0employment practices in the cutthroat world of moped and cycle delivery\u00a0weighed on share price performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Delivery Hero\u00a0Chair,\u00a0Kristin Skogen Lund,\u00a0was obliged to write to shareholders announcing a strategy review,\u00a0a\u00a0streamlining\u00a0of\u00a0costs\u00a0and\u00a0continuing\u00a0exits\u00a0from underperforming regions.\u00a0\u201cDespite this\u00a0significant progress\u00a0and our relentless focus to always deliver the best possible customer proposition, we acknowledge that the share price performance has been disappointing for all of us,\u201d she said. \u00d6stberg was the\u00a0letter\u2019s\u00a0co-signatory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We know how this movie is meant to end.\u00a0\u2018Founder-CEO\u00a0struggles to scale on the public\u00a0markets,\u00a0shareholders become impatient for\u00a0returns, founder-CEO\u00a0departs.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00d6stberg\u2019s story\u00a0arc is different and provides significant lessons\u00a0on the value of long-term\u00a0thinking, management\u00a0style,\u00a0and intense knowledge of the business.\u00a0He has survived\u00a0a number of\u00a0storms around\u00a0the company\u2019s\u00a0business model and\u00a0valuations and\u00a0has survived each of\u00a0them.\u00a0Delivery Hero\u2019s share\u00a0price is up 18%\u00a0this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, in a private market, it\u2019s much easier because you have to convince three\u00a0to five\u00a0board members and you can show them the\u00a0exact\u00a0economics and so on,\u201d he tells\u00a0me.\u00a0\u201cOn the public market, you cannot give that\u00a0same level\u00a0of disclosure, and you\u00a0have to\u00a0convince a lot more than just a few so, of course,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a challenge.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe advantage of being a founder is that\u00a0the business is\u00a0your baby. You want the best for your\u00a0baby\u00a0and you are willing to go through\u00a0fire and fury\u00a0and anger to make sure that your baby is going to do well.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the difference between a manager and a founder, that we are stubborn and we want the best, sometimes we are wrong, but sometimes we are right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0fine to look stupid for one or two or three years,\u00a0as long as\u00a0I know that in year four,\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Niklas \u00d6stberg<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

Delivery Hero\u2019s vision is\u00a0\u2018deliver anything\u2019\u2014hot food, groceries, household goods. The\u00a0quick commerce\u00a0market is projected to grow from $184.6bn in 2025 to\u00a0$337.6bn by\u00a02032\u00a0according to Fortune Business Insights. But getting\u00a0there\u00a0costs money, which is where the pressure starts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[In the past] every shareholder on the planet hated home delivery. [They said]\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0never going to\u00a0be\u00a0profitable. Our largest competitor in America was saying how stupid this is. Everyone was saying\u00a0\u2018this\u00a0is\u00a0the dumbest thing ever\u2019\u00a0and we\u00a0took\u00a0a lot of heat.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil they\u00a0realized\u00a0maybe\u00a0two, three, four years later, that the dumbest thing\u00a0is\u00a0not to do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLater on, we had a similar challenge when we went\u00a0multi-vertical, where we\u00a0deliver\u00a0from grocery stores.\u00a0Then we built our own warehouses. We built 1,000 warehouses\u2014micro-fulfilment\u00a0centers, or\u00a0Dmarts, as we call them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd,\u00a0of course,\u00a0that was\u00a0seen as\u00a0even dumber than delivery. It was\u00a0like,\u00a0\u2018you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0make money on delivering toothpaste and toilet paper.\u2019\u00a0We lost a lot of money on it, and so did everyone\u00a0else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then the capital ended in 2021\u00a0[the end of the low interest-rate\u00a0cycle]\u00a0and everyone went bankrupt, or close to bankrupt,\u00a0and started to scale down and we decided, no,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0still going to do it.\u00a0Again,\u00a0everyone\u00a0said,\u00a0\u2018that\u2019s the dumbest\u00a0decision\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0we came under\u00a0more\u00a0heat\u00a0for that. But now\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0also made that business model profitable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Patient capital is rare on the public\u00a0markets,\u00a0and activist investors\u00a0are increasingly\u00a0apparent\u00a0on share registers. \u00d6stberg says that the discipline demanded should be seen as a help, not\u00a0a drag.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would clearly be less of a painful path, I\u2019m sure, to not do it in the public sphere, especially in these transitions, or when things are a little bit rough, or you take a decision that\u2019s good for five years, but not good for a quarter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0do this because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0easy or\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the path of least resistance. We are fine to take the resistance,\u00a0as long as\u00a0I know that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0going to be right over time.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0fine to look stupid for one or two or three years,\u00a0as long as\u00a0I know that in year four,\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0prove it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think driving efficiency is a good thing, because that means you have a better return on your capital and you can invest in things that really\u00a0makes\u00a0a difference for consumers.\u00a0It has\u00a0also\u00a0made the company\u00a0much stronger and better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[In\u00a0times of change] the public company will have to move the fastest, because they will be so exposed if they\u2019re wrong\u00a0or\u00a0if they\u2019re not on the ball, while I think sometimes the private company can\u00a0be living in a bubble.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
