Le, the head of marketing at social media content creation platform <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/slateteams.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/slateteams.com\/\">Slate<\/a>, had offered one small suggestion for executives: \u201cIf companies are refreshing benefits this year, here\u2019s a free idea: Add a cleaning service stipend.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>While <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/startups-wellness-employee-benefits-grow-healthcare\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/startups-wellness-employee-benefits-grow-healthcare\/\">wellness stipends and gym perks<\/a> \u201care fine,\u201d she wrote, \u201cnot everyone wants to spend their limited free time on a treadmill. For a lot of us, a clean home does more for our well-being than another obligation.\u201d Le argued a home-cleaning perk could be more \u201cpractical. It\u2019s human. It takes one thing off the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And much to her surprise, her company not only responded, but quickly acted to add cleaning services as a benefit for employees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Le told <em>Fortune<\/em> she \u201dgenuinely didn\u2019t\u201d expect the company to respond that way, especially since she had just started at the company only a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hear a lot of organizations talk about valuing their people and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/brandstudio\/hilton-worldwide\/building-the-best-place-to-stay-by-becoming-the-best-place-to-work\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/brandstudio\/hilton-worldwide\/building-the-best-place-to-stay-by-becoming-the-best-place-to-work\/\">prioritizing culture<\/a>, but Slate actually demonstrated it in a very real, very immediate way,\u201d Le said. It wasn\u2019t performative. They didn\u2019t overthink it. They just listened and acted, which says a lot about how seriously they take their team.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it only took the human resources team at her company one day to message Le to to let her know they had seen her suggestion and \u201cwe loved it,\u201d and the leadership team agreed to add it as a benefit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sparked a really good internal discussion, and the leadership team agreed it makes total sense for Slate, especially since we\u2019re a fully remote team,\u201d Pamela Lopez, a human resources specialist with Slate, wrote in an internal message to Le. Employees receive this $200 benefit once per month, and the funds are added to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/ramp.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/ramp.com\/\">Ramp<\/a> card for them to use. Alternatively, employees can request reimbursement for the expense.  <\/p>\n<p><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"w-full\" height=\"491\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:7416866110005747713?collapsed=1\" title=\"Embedded post\" width=\"504\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/p>\n<p>Eric Stark, cofounder and president at Slate, told <em>Fortune <\/em>that while home cleaning services weren\u2019t something the leadership team had specifically discussed as a benefit in the past for his 40-person company, the idea stood out because of \u201chow practical and human the suggestion was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe takeaway is that you don\u2019t need grand, expensive programs to make a real difference,\u201d Stark added. \u201cSometimes the most impactful benefits come from listening closely to employees and removing friction from their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from traditional health care and retirement benefits, Slate also offers employees $100 stipends that can go toward a home office or monthly co-working space, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/workers-want-these-financial-benefits\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/workers-want-these-financial-benefits\/\">professional development<\/a> and a $200 monthly health and wellness stipend employees can use \u201cthat genuinely improve their day-to-day well-being,\u201d Stark said. They\u2019ve also added an \u201cAI enablement\u201d stipend employees can use to explore and experiment with new AI tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than centralizing experimentation or prescribing a single stack, we encourage employees to try emerging tools, learn what actually works in their role, and share those insights back with the team,\u201d Stark said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a practical way to build AI literacy across the company without forcing adoption from the top down.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le\u2019s post sparks online discussion about employee benefits<\/h2>\n<p>Le\u2019s post on LinkedIn received thousands of likes and hundreds of comments\u2014and she also shared her story on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@bbschnook\/video\/7583370210665565454?_r=1&amp;_t=ZP-932hRP2iYqV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@bbschnook\/video\/7583370210665565454?_r=1&amp;_t=ZP-932hRP2iYqV\">TikTok<\/a>. While that works for some people, not everyone wants to spend their free time at a gym, and have other things in mind for what would really help their health and wellbeing.\u00a0In fact, a 2025 employee benefits trends <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.adp.com\/resources\/articles-and-insights\/articles\/e\/employee-benefits-trends.aspx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adp.com\/resources\/articles-and-insights\/articles\/e\/employee-benefits-trends.aspx\">report<\/a> from ADP shows people prefer customizable benefits over generic plans that don\u2019t need specific needs, and the human capital management company recommends regularly asking for employee feedback on the benefits they need and want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany wellness benefits are framed as adding more to your schedule\u2014go to the gym, book a class, make time for therapy,\u201d Le said. \u201cThose things matter, but they don\u2019t remove the everyday mental load people are carrying. Your house is still messy. Dinner still needs to happen. Childcare logistics don\u2019t disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, offering benefits like cleaning services helps reduce the things people have to do during their 5-9, rather than piling more on.
