{"id":17199,"date":"2025-11-30T21:20:48","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T21:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/topat10.com\/?p=17199"},"modified":"2025-11-30T21:20:48","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T21:20:48","slug":"even-college-graduates-no-longer-think-a-degree-is-worth-the-cost-as-the-once-safe-path-to-the-american-dream-is-now-seen-as-a-risky-venture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/topat10.com\/?p=17199","title":{"rendered":"Even college graduates no longer think a degree is worth the cost as the once-safe path to the American dream is now seen as a risky venture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Americans\u2019 views on higher education have reversed sharply in less than a generation, as the enormous cost and uncertainty about finding work have turned college into a significant life risk.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>According to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/poll-dramatic-shift-americans-no-longer-see-four-year-college-degrees-rcna243672\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/poll-dramatic-shift-americans-no-longer-see-four-year-college-degrees-rcna243672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/poll-dramatic-shift-americans-no-longer-see-four-year-college-degrees-rcna243672\">recent poll from NBC News<\/a>, 63% of registered voters agreed that a four-year degree is \u201cnot worth the cost because people often graduate without specific job skills and with a large amount of debt to pay off.\u201d That\u2019s up from 47% in 2017 and 40% in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, just 33% agreed with the idea that a degree is \u201cworth the cost because people have a better chance to get a good job and earn more money over their lifetime.\u201d That\u2019s down from 49% in 2017 and 53% in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Even Americans who have earned college degrees flipped, with only 46% now saying that obtaining one is worth the cost versus 63% in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just remarkable to see attitudes on any issue shift this dramatically, and particularly on a central tenet of the American dream, which is a college degree. Americans used to view a college degree as aspirational \u2014 it provided an opportunity for a better life. And now that promise is really in doubt,\u201d said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the poll with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is really surprising about it is that everybody has moved. It\u2019s not just people who don\u2019t have a college degree,\u201d Horwitt added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture class=\"block w-full\"><\/picture><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, attitudes among Republicans, independents and Democrats have all shifted against getting a four-year degree, but especially among Republicans. <\/p>\n<p>And 71% of Americans without a college degree now say it\u2019s not worth the cost versus 26% who think it is, after splitting almost evenly in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Separate data still shows that college graduates overall earn more money and have lower rates of unemployment than non-graduates.<\/p>\n<p>But <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/college-labor-market#--:explore:unemployment\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/college-labor-market#--:explore:unemployment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/college-labor-market#--:explore:unemployment\">joblessness among recent grads<\/a> has been climbing since 2022\u2014the year OpenAI\u2019s ChagGPT came out\u2014and now exceeds the total unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<p>And an analysis from Goldman Sachs revealed that the labor market for recent graduates has weakened to the point where their <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/14\/how-easy-to-find-job-college-graduate-safety-premium-gen-z\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/14\/how-easy-to-find-job-college-graduate-safety-premium-gen-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/14\/how-easy-to-find-job-college-graduate-safety-premium-gen-z\/\">traditional edge over non-degree peers is at historic lows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As evidence mounts that AI is <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/25\/ai-entry-level-jobs-gen-z-careers-young-workers-linkedin\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/25\/ai-entry-level-jobs-gen-z-careers-young-workers-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/25\/ai-entry-level-jobs-gen-z-careers-young-workers-linkedin\/\">shrinking opportunities for entry-level positions<\/a>, more young Americans are considering vocational schools and going into more hands-on trades.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s as student loan debt continues to saddle borrowers for decades, while tuition has doubled at public colleges and surged 75% at private schools since 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Preston Cooper, a senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, told NBC News that the long-held view that bachelor\u2019s degrees pay off in the job market has eroded.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think students are more wary about taking on the risk of a four-year or even a two-year degree,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re now more interested in any pathway that can get them into the labor force more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Confidence in higher education has been waning for years. According to a\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/695003\/perceived-importance-college-hits-new-low.aspx\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/695003\/perceived-importance-college-hits-new-low.aspx\">Gallup Poll in September<\/a>, only 35% said going to college is \u201cvery important\u201d \u2014 a record low \u2014 down from 51% in 2019 and 75% in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the student-debt explosion has crushed the value proposition: a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/05\/23\/is-college-worth-it-2\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/05\/23\/is-college-worth-it-2\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/05\/23\/is-college-worth-it-2\/\">Pew Research survey<\/a> last year showed only 22% said the cost of a four-year degree is worth it in spite of loans while\u00a047% said it\u2019s only worth if without loans and 29% said the cost is not worth it either way.<\/p>\n<p>NBC\u2019s polling data points to dimmer views compared to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/news\/college-degree-value-generational-divide\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/news\/college-degree-value-generational-divide\">survey by Indeed<\/a> earlier this year that found that a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/college-degree-waste-of-money-gen-z-millennial-indeed-study-ai-obsolete\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/college-degree-waste-of-money-gen-z-millennial-indeed-study-ai-obsolete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/college-degree-waste-of-money-gen-z-millennial-indeed-study-ai-obsolete\/\">third of all graduates said their degree was a \u201cwaste of money.\u201d<\/a> And among Gen Zers, 51% expressed remorse, versus 41% of millennials and just 20% of baby boomers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColleges and universities have lost that connection they\u2019ve had with a large swath of the American people based on affordability,\u201d pollster Horwitt told NBC News. \u201cThey\u2019re now seen as out of touch and not accessible to many Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans\u2019 views on higher education have reversed sharply in less than a generation, as the enormous cost and uncertainty about finding work have turned college into a significant life risk.
