Illinois Gov.\u00a0J.B. Pritzker<\/a>\u00a0says he\u2019s worried about how President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0might respond to the growing controversy over documents tying him to\u00a0Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMy great fear, of course, is that with the release of that information, which I think will be devastating for Trump, he\u2019s going to do everything in his power to distract,\u201d Pritzker told The Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview on Wednesday. \u201cWhat does that mean? I mean, he might take us to war with Venezuela just to get a distraction in the news and take it out of the headlines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pritzker, widely seen as among the\u00a0top potential Democratic presidential contenders<\/a>\u00a0in 2028, also directed some of his sharpest criticism at members of his own party. He said the decision by seven Democratic senators and one independent to side with Republicans in a Senate vote to end the government shutdown was an \u201cenormous mistake\u201d that played right into Trump\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been on team fight from the very beginning,\u201d Pritzker said. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t appreciate when we\u2019ve got Democrats who are caving in and doing basically what the Trump administration wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pritzker did not\u00a0join calls<\/a>\u00a0for Senate Democratic Leader\u00a0Chuck Schumer<\/a>\u00a0to step aside, which has come from some Democrats who think he should have fought harder. \u201cI\u2019m not sure this is the one thing that people should focus on to put them over the edge about it,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n

He was instead more critical of the\u00a0group of Democratic senators<\/a>\u00a0who voted for the deal, which included Sen. Dick Durbin, his own state\u2019s senior senator.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were winning,\u201d said Pritzker, pointing to\u00a0resounding Democratic wins<\/a>\u00a0in elections across the country last week. \u201cI do not understand why people caved when we were on the verge of getting real change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Trump\u2019s reelection, Pritzker \u2014 an heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune \u2014 has been among the president\u2019s\u00a0fiercest Democratic critics<\/a>. On Wednesday, he described Trump as \u201ca narcissist\u201d and said he believed the president \u201chas dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pritzker\u2019s comments about Trump\u2019s use of the politics of distraction came as\u00a0newly released documents<\/a>\u00a0reignited scrutiny of Trump\u2019s relationship with Epstein. In a 2019 email to a journalist, Epstein wrote that Trump \u201cknew about the girls,\u201d but what he knew \u2014 and whether it pertained to the sex offender\u2019s crimes \u2014 is unclear. The White House accused Democrats of selectively leaking the emails to smear the president.<\/p>\n

But few governors have witnessed Trump\u2019s use of force as directly as Pritzker, who has seen federal agents descend on Chicago and its suburbs in recent months as part of \u201c\u00a0Operation Midway Blitz<\/a>.\u201d More than 3,300 people suspected of immigration violations have been arrested since September, with some raids involving helicopters, tear gas and nighttime operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is part of the militarization of our American cities that Donald Trump is engaging in,\u201d Pritzker said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s dangerous. It shouldn\u2019t happen, but he\u2019s got a purpose behind it. And it\u2019s to affect our elections in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pritzker said the large immigration crackdown seen in Chicago would soon expand to other states, saying that he had spoken recently to\u00a0North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein<\/a>\u00a0after reports that the administration might send federal forces into Charlotte.<\/p>\n
