And that\u2019s precisely what happens. A quick blowtorch to the back frame loosens the bolts, and Pala is able to swap the original part for a state-of-the-art titanium rear triangle in just a few minutes. Instead of the original hefty old Sturmy-Archer three-speed gearing, Brompton has developed its own new 12-speed system, which has a mini four-speed cassette on the outside, and three in the internal hub.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the dimensions are the same, we\u2019re going to be able to strip the bike back completely,\u201d enthuses Pala. \u201cWe\u2019re then going to rebuild it around the main frame and fork.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, while WIRED appreciates this is going to be a Brompton stowed safely on the Ship of Theseus<\/a>, it remains an impressive, decade-spanning example of good design, and the importance of considered, rather than reactionary upgrades.<\/p>\n
