It\u2019s a bike for people who wouldn\u2019t necessarily call themselves cyclists, with a uniform in some countries that\u2019s more Lacroix than lycra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe&#8217;re very globally spread out,\u201d says Will Carleysmith, Brompton\u2019s chief design and engineering officer. \u201cThe UK is our most commuter-focused audience, but it represents just 16 percent of our business\u2014the rest of what we make goes overseas, with China taking 40 percent of our sales, interestingly with a 50-50 male\/female split.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In Asia, the Brompton is viewed quite differently than in the UK, where it\u2019s typically seen as a practical tool for urban commuting. \u201cIt\u2019s a super social, highly desirable tool that\u2019s much more about self-expression,\u201d claims Carleysmith. Collaborations are helping to underline this \u201cstyle\u201d narrative, too, with the likes of Barbour, Palace Skateboarding, Liberty London, Tour de France, LINE Friends, and art collaborations with Crew Nation and cultural luminaries including Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, and LCD Soundsystem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But like any good 50th birthday, there have been both happy and sad tears. In 2022, Brompton sold its 1 millionth bike. During Covid lockdown, demand increased five-fold, but as a result of supply chain and shipping bottlenecks, rising costs, and heavy investment in new designs, pretax profits plunged by 99 percent to just $6,335 (\u00a34,602, or roughly the cost of a single Brompton <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.brompton.com\/p\/821\/t-line-one-23\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.brompton.com\/p\/821\/t-line-one-23&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brompton.com\/p\/821\/t-line-one-23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T-Line One Speed<\/a>) for the year ending March\u202f31,\u202f2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s not the only cycling brand faced with post-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\">Covid<\/a> cash flow issues, but rather than being stuck with excess stock, its financial woes have been thanks to a global drop in demand and heavy investment, first with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/brompton-electric-folding-bike\/\">Brompton Electric<\/a> range and the bigger, 20-inch all-terrain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/brompton-electric-folding-bike\/\">G Line<\/a>, which WIRED tested at launch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And that\u2019s precisely what happens.
