These are objects that exist in interstellar space\u2014the areas between stars\u2014and which are not gravitationally bound to any star. The two other interstellar objects discovered to date are the comets 1I\/\u02bbOumuamua and 2I\/Borisov.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">3I\/ATLAS was discovered on July 1, when its existence was reported by a telescope at Rio Hurtado in Chile, operated by the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asteroid Terrestrial Impact Alert System<\/a>. Known commonly as ATLAS, this is a NASA-funded system developed and operated by the University of Hawaii to detect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/asteroids\/\">asteroids<\/a> that could potentially hit Earth. JEWITT (UCLA)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Archived data collected in the preceding weeks by ATLAS&#8217; three other telescopes, as well as by the Zwicky Sky Facility at the Palomar Observatory, operated by the California Institute of Technology, confirmed the discovery. It is currently located about 670 million kilometers from the sun and is approaching our star from the direction of Sagittarius at a speed of about 61 km per second.
