Richard \u201cDick\u201d Eastland, the owner and\u00a0director of Camp\u00a0Mystic in Kerr\u00a0County, Texas, died during\u00a0the flash floods\u00a0that struck Central\u00a0Texas on Friday, his nephew confirmed on Facebook<\/a>. Eastland was 74.<\/p>\n

The Eastland family has owned and operated Camp Mystic, the Christian girls\u2019 summer camp, since 1939<\/a>. The camp was founded back in 1926. Dick was the third generation to manage Mystic after he and his wife, Tweety, purchased the camp in 1974, serving as executive directors for over 50 years. Eastland\u2019s wife Tweety was found safe at home, officials said.<\/p>\n

Eastland\u2019s children<\/a> are also integral to Camp Mystic\u2019s operations: Richard Eastland, their eldest son, serves as head chef and runs the dining hall; Edward Eastland, the youngest son, is the director at Camp Mystic\u2019s original Guadalupe River site, and manages the camp with his wife, Mary Liz; and Britt Eastland, another son, directs Camp Mystic\u2019s Cypress Lake campus, a newer addition established in 2020.<\/p>\n

Dick Eastland was\u00a0known for his\u00a0involvement in\u00a0the West Kerr County community, serving on the\u00a0Hunt Independent\u00a0School District\u00a0Board and coaching\u00a0youth sports, particularly the West Kerr County Little League and the West Kerr County Little Dribblers. Eastland also notably survived brain cancer.<\/p>\n

According to statements<\/a> from camp officials and survivors, Eastland was\u00a0last seen leading a group of girls from a cabin trying to\u00a0get them to safety. His body was later found near his vehicle. <\/p>\n

On July 4, severe flooding in Texas Hill Country caused the Guadalupe\u00a0River to rise more than 25 feet in less than an hour, which caught many campers and staff off guard. Officials say<\/a> 27 campers and counselors died at Camp Mystic, including young girls\u00a0from various\u00a0states. As of July 7, at\u00a0least 10 campers\u00a0and one counselor\u00a0remain missing. Statewide, the death\u00a0toll from the\u00a0floods has reached\u00a0at least 95, with\u00a075 people reported\u00a0dead in Kerr\u00a0County. The Texas National\u00a0Guard and local\u00a0authorities have\u00a0deployed helicopters, boats, and drones\u00a0to locate survivors\u00a0and recover the\u00a0missing.<\/p>\n

Survivors described\u00a0scenes of confusion as\u00a0staff\u00a0worked to move\u00a0campers to higher\u00a0ground. \u201cWe went\u00a0to bed thinking\u00a0it was just a\u00a0normal thunderstorm,\u201d Callie McAlary, a\u00a016-year-old camper, told Fox News<\/em><\/a>. \u201cOne minute\u00a0you see lightning\u00a0strike next to\u00a0your cabin, and\u00a0next to you, you\u00a0hear water\u2019s coming\u00a0up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Camp\u00a0officials and\u00a0survivors credited\u00a0Eastland and\u00a0the staff with\u00a0helping save\u00a0lives during\u00a0the disaster. Texas Governor Greg\u00a0Abbott has since visited\u00a0Camp Mystic, declaring a\u00a0state of emergency\u00a0and pledging continued\u00a0support for search\u00a0and rescue operations. \u201cI urge every\u00a0Texan to join\u00a0me in prayer\u00a0this Sunday\u2014for the\u00a0lives lost, for\u00a0those still missing, for the recovery\u00a0of our communities, and for the\u00a0safety of those\u00a0on the front\u00a0lines,\u201d Abbott\u00a0said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n
