Meanwhile, Trump and his former confidant <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tesla<\/a> CEO Elon Musk continued to trade passive-aggressive\u2014and just plain aggressive\u2014jabs on their social media platforms Truth Social and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a>, respectively.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An action-packed Thursday drove markets down as multiple glugs of headlines prompted stock market moves. The Dow closed down 0.25%, while the S&amp;P 500 closed down 0.53%. The tech-driven <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a> dropped 0.83%.<\/p>\n<p>However, the major driver was a growing <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/05\/elon-musk-without-me-trump-would-have-lost-the-election\/\">public feud<\/a> between two billionaire titans: President Donald Trump and his former consigliere Elon Musk. <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/#quarterly-disclosure\">Shares<\/a> of Tesla, where Musk is the CEO, fell more than 14% today, as investors feared the fallout between the president and electric vehicle manufacturer could further dent Tesla\u2019s fortunes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not what you want to see as as a Tesla shareholder,\u201d said Tesla mega-bull Dan Ives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/06\/05\/teslas-stock-is-down-on-market-belief-that-trump-wont-play-nice-says-wedbushs-dan-ives.html\">speaking<\/a> on <em>CNBC<\/em>, adding that he didn\u2019t think the feud was wrapping up just yet. \u201cGet the popcorn out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The battle between Trump and Musk that played out over social media has raised questions about the future of Tesla being simpatico with regulators when it comes to autonomous vehicles, said Ives. \u201cDoes Trump now not want to play nice in the sandbox with Musk,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s timing in going off on Trump is also a head-scratcher, said Ives, given Tesla is launching its Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas this month. Investors will wonder whether the \u201cbeef\u201d between the two will increase or taper off, Ives said. But, he noted: \u201cFriends fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early cracks began to show between the two former buddies when Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) czar Musk appeared to be divided over the tax cuts and spending package referred to as Trump\u2019s \u201cbig beautiful bill.\u201d Early on, Musk was deferential in his public comments on the bill, even as he said he feared it might undercut DOGE\u2019s attempts to slash federal spending. However, after his light criticism was public, he announced that he would get out of DOGE.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then last Friday, Trump and Musk put on a show of unity with a farewell press briefing in the Oval Office where Trump presented Musk with a golden key and both men showered praise on each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Less than a week later, the rift was stark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Musk] hasn\u2019t said bad about me personally but I\u2019m sure that will be next,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cI\u2019m very disappointed in Elon; I\u2019ve helped Elon a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Musk did not mince words about the bill, calling it a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/03\/elon-musk-trump-spending-bill\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4244072\">disgusting abomination<\/a>.\u201d He posted on X: \u201cIn the entire history of civilization, there has never been legislation that [was] both big and beautiful,\u201d wrote Musk. \u201cEither you get a big and ugly bill or a slim and beautiful bill.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump posted on Truth Social that \u201cElon was \u2018wearing thin,\u2019 I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch an obvious lie. So sad,\u201d posted Musk in response on Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The battle escalated until later in the day when Musk alleged on X that Trump was \u201cin the Epstein files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the real reason they have not been made public,\u201d wrote Musk. \u201cHave a nice day, DJT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, earlier in the day Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had a productive call with President Xi Jinping of China on a trade deal for about 90 minutes. The outcome was a \u201cvery positive conclusion for both Countries,\u201d the president wrote on social media. He said the conversation was focused almost entirely on \u201cTRADE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it remains unclear how trade talks between the two nations will progress, the announcement led to an initial climb that ultimately cooled down before turning negative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investor Takeaways<\/h2>\n<p>While headlines drive stock markets to move up and down throughout the day, many investors are blocking out the noise and looking for opportunities in the volatility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kimball Brooker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firsteagle.com\/our-people\/kimball-brooker-jr\">portfolio manager<\/a> and co-head of First Eagle Investments global value team, told <em>Fortune<\/em> that day-to-day issues aren\u2019t impacting their assessment of the value of the businesses they\u2019re invested in. If anything, the volatility can be beneficial for investors who have predetermined target prices, said Brooker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf things get crazy enough and people are worried enough that volatility goes up, that can be a very helpful thing as long as you know what you want to buy and what you want to pay for it,\u201d Brooker said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few hours of news isn\u2019t going to have a huge impact on Google\u2019s future performance, for instance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a list of companies we want to buy and we have identified what we\u2019re willing to pay for the companies on that list,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cIf you think about the market and volatility increasing, there\u2019s just a higher chance\u2014everything else being equal\u2014 that it\u2019s going to come into our range.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, ValueWorks hedge fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valueworksllc.com\/the-valueworks-team\">founder<\/a> Charles Lemonides told <em>Fortune<\/em> that even though markets have been largely flat for an extended period, businesses are still performing well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dollar-general\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dollar General<\/a> stock was up 1.9% on Thursday, while <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dollar-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dollar Tree<\/a> was up 9%. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/five-below\/\" target=\"_blank\">Five Below<\/a> stock is up 5.6%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose numbers are telling you people are still shopping and the world is still going around,\u201d said Lemonides. \u201cThere is a lot of noise on the tariffs and in politics and personalities and the equity markets\u2014but in the real world, things are pretty status quo.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that if investors think a company is \u201cawesome\u201d and they want to own it in three or five years from now, they should go ahead and move forward. He noted that stocks like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/qualcomm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Qualcomm<\/a> and Micron are relatively inexpensive right now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His fund purchased Hudson Pacific Properties yesterday, said Lemonides. The real estate investment trust owns office buildings on the West Coast and the stock was previously under a dollar per share. Now, it\u2019s trading around $2.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, while stock prices move around, the actual health of companies isn\u2019t impacted all that much, noted Brooker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re willing to wait, volatility really does become your friend,\u201d Brooker said. \u201cIt\u2019s unpleasant. I realize many people don\u2019t like things moving around, especially when they\u2019re going down.
