Planned changes to the program in the GOP\u2019s \u201cbig beautiful bill\u201d are estimated to throw over 7 million people off the Medicaid rolls.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As House Republicans negotiate how much to cut Medicaid in order to expand tax cuts for wealthy Americans, President Donald Trump had a warning for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t f\u2014k around with Medicaid,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/20\/trump-megabill-opposition-medicaid-00358394\">told Republicans<\/a> late last night, according to unnamed sources quoted in <em>Politico<\/em>, <em>Axios<\/em> and other outlets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to strengthen Medicaid, strengthen Medicare,\u201d Trump later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PT_lvh7Ag6M\">told reporters<\/a>. Asked directly about working-class voters who supported him, the president said, \u201cThey won\u2019t lose insurance,\u201d and added that he would cut drug prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s latest statements sides with the MAGA wing of the party, exemplified by former advisor and podcaster Steve Bannon\u2019s exhortation against <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/02\/16\/steve-bannon-us-hospitals-republicans-congress-medicaid-cuts-maga\/\">taking a \u201cmeat axe\u201d<\/a> to the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of MAGAs on Medicaid,\u201d Bannon said in February. \u201cIf you don\u2019t think so, you are dead wrong.\u201d Dozens of Republicans agree with him, having expressed concern to House and Senate leadership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The statements are an admission of just how politically risky it has become to cut the largest health-insurance program in America as Republicans juggle a wish list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/20\/trump-megabill-opposition-medicaid-00358394\">high-cost items<\/a> in the bill, including making the 2017 tax cuts permanent, boosting defense spending even further, and cutting taxes for Social Security income, multi-millionaire inheritances, and high-income blue-state residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Trump and Republicans are working to protect and preserve Medicaid for the Americans who need it most: low-income families, pregnant women, disabled individuals, and seniors,&#8221; White House spokesperson Kush Desai said in an email to <em>Fortune<\/em>. &#8220;Medicaid should not and cannot be a welfare program for illegal immigrants, fraudsters, and able-bodied adults who can work but choose not to.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>However, given the math of finding $880 billion in spending cuts, Democrats and policy advocates say there&#8217;s no way to avoid cutting Medicaid coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The program covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/02\/27\/us\/politics\/medicaid-enrollment.html\">72 million<\/a> people, or one in four Americans, and half of all children in the U.S. (It\u2019s also one of the more cost-effective insurance programs; by comparison, Medicare covers about 4 million fewer people at an additional cost of $300 billion.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 20 million Medicaid patients identify as Republican, according to health-policy research outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/from-drew-altman\/the-spotlight-is-on-medicaid-cuts-but-the-aca-marketplaces-could-see-a-one-third-cut-in-enrollment\/\">KFF<\/a>, including many rural and poor residents in deep-red states such as Arkansas, Kentucky, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/02\/27\/us\/politics\/medicaid-enrollment.html\">Louisiana<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In its current shape, the GOP bill would throw 7.6 million people off Medicaid, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). It would primarily accomplish this by expanding paperwork requirements, including putting in more frequent eligibility checks and asking adults without children to prove they are working.
