Administration officials and Trump himself signaled on Sunday that they won&#8217;t back down from their aggressive stance. Meanwhile, an inflation report is due later this week as well as bank earnings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Wall Street remained in fear mode over President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs on Sunday evening as futures pointed to more steep losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dow\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dow<\/a> Jones Industrial Average futures tumbled\u00a01,302 points, or 3.3%, while S&amp;P 500 futures sank 3.9% and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a> futures dived 4.9%. That follows a devastating week that saw the worst selloff since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 10-year Treasury yield dropped 8.5 basis points to 3.906%, and US crude oil prices fell 3.7% to $59.72 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, Trump announced a minimum tariff rate of 10% and higher rates for 57 economies like China (34%), the European Union (20%), and Japan (24%). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/research\/sovereigns\/liberation-day-takes-us-tariff-rate-back-to-level-last-seen-in-1909-03-04-2025\">Fitch Ratings<\/a> estimated that the effective tariff rate could hit 25% on average \u2014 the highest in more than 115 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers aired caution in an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LHSummers\/status\/1908883704899862892\">X post<\/a> on Sunday, saying there&#8217;s a very good chance of more market turbulence similar to what was seen on Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those sessions represented the fourth largest two-day drop in the last 85 years, Summer said. The selloff wiped out about $6 trillion in market cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA drop of this magnitude signals that there\u2019s likely to be trouble ahead, and people ought to be very cautious,\u201d Summers wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump administration and the president himself defended the tariffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,&#8221; Trump told reporters when asked about the market rout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pointed to the US trade deficit with China and said he&#8217;s willing to make a deal, &#8220;but they have to solve their surplus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trumps-top-economic-adviser-hassett-refutes-tariffs-raise\/story?id=120523274\">ABC News<\/a> that more than 50 countries have reached out to the White House to negotiate on tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for now, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the tariffs will remain and won\u2019t be postponed. While the minimum 10% tariff took effect early Saturday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/04\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-declares-national-emergency-to-increase-our-competitive-edge-protect-our-sovereignty-and-strengthen-our-national-and-economic-security\/\">individualized levies<\/a> will go into place Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are definitely going to stay in place for days and weeks,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/commerce-secretary-howard-lutnick-says-new-tariffs-here-to-stay\/\">CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to Trump&#8217;s sweeping tariffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/04\/05\/trump-tariffs-us-recession-outlook-gdp-unemployment-stagflation-inflation-fed\/\">JPMorgan<\/a> now sees a recession, with GDP shrinking 0.3% this year. But Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday there doesn\u2019t have to be a recession and called the stock selloff a short-term reaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that I can tell you, as the Treasury secretary, what I\u2019ve been very impressed with is the market infrastructure, that we had record volume on Friday.
