One of Wall Street\u2019s most bearish Tesla<\/a> Inc. analysts further reduced estimates for the company\u2019s earnings, citing the magnitude of car-buyer backlash against Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s first-quarter vehicle deliveries were far below even JPMorgan Chase<\/a> & Co. analyst Ryan Brinkman\u2019s pessimistic estimate, \u201cconfirming the unprecedented brand damage we had earlier feared,\u201d he said in a report Friday.<\/p>\n

The sales report \u201ccauses us to think that \u2014 if anything \u2014 we may have underestimated the degree of consumer reaction,\u201d Brinkman wrote.<\/p>\n

Tesla shares fell more than 4% at the start of regular trading. Since hitting a record high on Dec. 17, the stock slumped 44% through the close Thursday.<\/p>\n

During the first three months of the year, Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles, its worst quarterly total\u00a0since 2022<\/a>. In addition to changing over production lines at each of its assembly plants to build the redesigned Model Y, the automaker was contending with Musk, its chief executive officer, becoming\u00a0a more polarizing figure<\/a>\u00a0due to his interventions in global politics.<\/p>\n

JPMorgan now expects Tesla\u2019s first-quarter earnings to slip to 36 cents a share, short of its previous projection of 40 cents and analysts\u2019 average estimate of 46 cents.<\/p>\n

Brinkman also trimmed his full-year projection to $2.30 a share. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg are on average estimating the company will earn $2.70 per share \u2014 and Brinkman notes that this figure has dropped 17% since Tesla last reported quarterly earnings in late January.<\/p>\n

Musk is expected to step back from his role leading the initiative known as the Department of Government Efficiency once his 130-day period as a temporary adviser to President Donald Trump has lapsed, Bloomberg reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n

But the billionaire will still wield significant influence over the federal cost-cutting effort and remain a Trump confidant after his formal departure, according to people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n

After emerging as Trump\u2019s biggest contributor in the US presidential election, Musk set his sights on Europe<\/a> early this year, attacking more mainstream political figures and aligning with far-right parties and activists. That\u2019s backfired for Tesla \u2014 sales plummeted 62%<\/a> last quarter in Germany, home to the company\u2019s only vehicle-assembly plant on the continent.<\/p>\n
