The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported that advisers have considered a global tariff of up 20% on almost all countries, though reciprocal tariffs are still an option. That follows an earlier report that said Trump is eyeing more aggressive duties to transform the US economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors are buckling up for a potentially bumpy ride as a critical week for markets and the economy kicks off, with reports indicating President Donald Trump&#8217;s trade war could soon get even more intense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/dow\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dow<\/a> futures were down 170 points, or 0.41%, while S&amp;P 500 futures fell 0.77% and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a> futures sank 1.4%. That follows Friday&#8217;s selloff that saw the broad market index sink 2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond slipped 5.9% basis points to 4.196%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tariff news dominated the weekend and indicated more escalation is ahead. On Sunday, sources told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/trump-says-he-couldnt-care-less-if-car-prices-go-up-b9b4a211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> that Trump has pushed his advisers to get more aggressive on tariffs, including higher rates on a wider set of nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One option under consideration in recent days is a global tariff of up to 20% that hits nearly all US trading partners, reviving an idea Trump floated on the campaign trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 20% rate would further up the ante. Fitch Ratings earlier estimated that if Trump carried out all his previously announced plans, the effective US tariff rate could hit 18% on average\u2014the highest level in 90 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reciprocal tariffs, where the US matches duties or trade barriers from other countries, are still an option too, according to the <em>Journal<\/em>, but one source that said Trump wants a &#8220;big and simple&#8221; policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That suggests the eventual tariff policy will be broader than&nbsp;Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u2019s \u201cdirty 15\u201d plan to set tariffs on the 15% of countries that the administration considers the worst trading partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/03\/29\/republicans-trump-tariffs-trade-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em> reported on Saturday that Trump is considering a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/29\/trump-tariffs-more-aggressive-universal-duty-transform-us-economy-reciprocal-april-2\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/29\/trump-tariffs-more-aggressive-universal-duty-transform-us-economy-reciprocal-april-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single universal tariff<\/a> as part of an effort to fundamentally transform the US economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means most imports would face the same rate&nbsp;no matter which country they are from, the report said, adding that Trump views a single duty as less likely to be watered down by exemptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intense discussions are ongoing ahead of Wednesday, which Trump has billed as \u201cLiberation Day,\u201d when his next batch of tariffs will be unveiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has already slapped tariffs on China, Canada, Mexico, steel, aluminum and autos, while threatening duties on pharmaceuticals, chips, lumber and the European Union.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/22\/trump-reciprocal-tariffs-flexibility-china-stock-market-canada-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested he would show some \u201cflexibility&#8221;<\/a> on reciprocal tariffs,&nbsp;and earlier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/22\/trump-tariffs-reciprocal-duties-liberation-targeted-levies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports said those would be more targeted<\/a>,&nbsp;raising hopes on Wall Street that their impact would be less severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after stocks rallied, his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/26\/trump-sets-auto-tariffs-foreign-made-plants-interest-loans-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announcement of auto tariffs<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday contributed to another selloff, which was also fueled by signs that tariffs were worsening inflation as well as consumers\u2019 expectations of future inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/29\/trump-auto-tariffs-permanent-carmakers-price-hikes\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/29\/trump-auto-tariffs-permanent-carmakers-price-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump stood by his auto tariffs<\/a>, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-says-couldnt-care-less-automakers-raise-prices-tariffs-rcna198731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC News<\/a> that they are permanent and that he doesn&#8217;t care of they cause carmakers to hike prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I couldn\u2019t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars,\u201d he said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump later said if prices on foreign cars go up, then consumers will buy American cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, several big reports are due this week that could reveal how much stress the economy is feeling from Trump&#8217;s tariffs and steep federal job cuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, the Institute for Supply Management&#8217;s manufacturing activity index for March will come out, and the Labor Department will report February job openings and turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, ADP will release private-sector payroll data for March.
