In an interview with NBC News, he added that, &#8220;I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars.&#8221; But even cars assembled in the US have foreign-made parts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump said his new auto tariffs are permanent and shrugged off concerns that they will cause carmakers to raise prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-says-couldnt-care-less-automakers-raise-prices-tariffs-rcna198731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with NBC News<\/a> on Saturday, he was asked about a recent <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/trump-tariffs-automaker-prices-warning-928bc7a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em> report that said he warned auto CEOs not to hike prices while discussing tariffs with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No, I never said that. I couldn\u2019t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars,&#8221; Trump replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, &#8220;I couldn\u2019t care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump later said if prices on foreign cars go up, then consumers will buy American cars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also confirmed the tariffs are here to stay, saying, \u201cAbsolutely, they\u2019re permanent, sure. The world has been ripping off the United States for the last 40 years and more. And all we\u2019re doing is being fair, and frankly, I\u2019m being very generous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign-made auto parts would also be hit with a 25% tariff, but vehicles and parts imported under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade deal will not see duties until the government establishes a process for imposing them, the White House has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While more than half the value of imported auto parts came from Mexico and Canada last year, over $70 billion came from areas not covered by the USMCA pact, including Asia and Europe, according to data from the International Trade Association <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-autos-tariffs-trade-detroit-europe-9c127dd75fb8a8da739a4020c898a705\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-autos-tariffs-trade-detroit-europe-9c127dd75fb8a8da739a4020c898a705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cited by the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US and foreign automakers have closely integrated supply chains that span North America. During the manufacturing process, cars and parts can cross between the US, Mexico and Canada multiple times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Trump ally Elon Musk has warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tesla<\/a>, which manufactures all of its cars sold in the US domestically, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/27\/elon-musk-warns-trump-tariff-effect-not-trivial-for-tesla\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/27\/elon-musk-warns-trump-tariff-effect-not-trivial-for-tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be affected by the auto tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives has estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/28\/trump-car-tariffs-will-cost-americans-100-billion-white-house-wont-budge-manufacturing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/28\/trump-car-tariffs-will-cost-americans-100-billion-white-house-wont-budge-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">car prices could go up by $5,000 to $10,000<\/a>\u00a0because of the auto tariffs, depending on whether a vehicle is a mass-market or premium brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery automaker in the world will have to raise prices in some form selling into the U.S., and the supply-chain logistics of this tariff announcement heard around the world is hard to even put our arms around at this moment,\u201d he wrote in a research note on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the White House has said tariffs are meant to revitalize the US industrial base, Ives is skeptical that car manufacturing can be completely reshored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s because even cars built in America come equipped with foreign-made parts and components that constitute 40% to 50% of their value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA U.S. car with all U.S. parts made in the U.S. is a fictional tale not even possible today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>This story was originally featured on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/29\/trump-auto-tariffs-permanent-carmakers-price-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune.com<\/a><\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump said his new auto tariffs are permanent and shrugged off concerns that they will cause carmakers to raise prices.
