California relies on <a href=\"https:\/\/water.ca.gov\/News\/News-Releases\/2025\/Jan-25\/Snow-Survey-January-2025\">the Sierra snowpack for about one-third of its freshwater supply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">However, Southern California started out the 2024\u201325 water year pretty dry. The region got some rain from an atmospheric river in November, but not much. After that, most of the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-an-atmospheric-river-with-flooding-and-mudslides-in-california-a-hydrologist-explains-the-good-and-bad-of-these-storms-and-how-theyre-changing-222249\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-an-atmospheric-river-with-flooding-and-mudslides-in-california-a-hydrologist-explains-the-good-and-bad-of-these-storms-and-how-theyre-changing-222249&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-an-atmospheric-river-with-flooding-and-mudslides-in-california-a-hydrologist-explains-the-good-and-bad-of-these-storms-and-how-theyre-changing-222249\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atmospheric rivers<\/a> that hit the West Coast from October into January veered northward into Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When the air is warm and dry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/special-topics\/water-science-school\/science\/evapotranspiration-and-water-cycle\">transpiration<\/a> and evaporation also suck water out of the plants and soil.
