Former OpenAI executive<\/span> Mira Murati<\/a> says it could take decades, but AI<\/a> systems eventually will perform a wide range of cognitive tasks as well as humans do\u2014a prospective technological milestone widely known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, it feels quite achievable,\u201d Murati said at WIRED\u2019s The Big Interview event in San Francisco on Tuesday. In her first interview since resigning as OpenAI\u2019s chief technology officer<\/a> in September, Murati told WIRED\u2019s Steven Levy that she\u2019s not overly concerned about recent chatter in the AI industry that developing more powerful generative AI models is proving challenging.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrent evidence shows that progress will likely continue,\u201d Murati said. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of evidence to the contrary. Whether we need new ideas to get to AGI-level systems, that\u2019s uncertain. I\u2019m quite optimistic that the progress will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks reflect her enduring interest in trying to find a way to bring increasingly capable AI systems into the world despite splitting from OpenAI. Reuters reported<\/a> in October that Murati is founding her own AI startup to develop proprietary models and that it could raise over $100 million in venture capital funding. On Tuesday, Murati declined to elaborate about the venture.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m figuring out what it\u2019s going to look like,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m in the midst of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murati started out in aerospace and then Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla, where she worked on the Model S and Model X electric cars. She also oversaw product and engineering at virtual reality startup Leap Motion before joining OpenAI in 2018 and helping manage services such as ChatGPT<\/a> and Dall-E<\/a>. She became one of OpenAI\u2019s top executives<\/a> and was briefly in charge last year<\/a> while board members wrestled with the fate of CEO Sam Altman<\/a>.<\/p>\n
