While the US organ donor system has existed for decades, bone marrow has never been regularly collected from those deceased donors in the same way that hearts, lungs, kidneys, and livers have. Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.2217\/rme.11.89\">previous<\/a> <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.isct-cytotherapy.org\/article\/S1465-3249(12)70619-9\/abstract\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.isct-cytotherapy.org\/article\/S1465-3249(12)70619-9\/abstract&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isct-cytotherapy.org\/article\/S1465-3249(12)70619-9\/abstract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and Johns Hopkins University, Ossium developed a way to extract bone marrow from the spinal column, a part of the body that typically went unused. The company has partnered with US organ procurement organizations to recover spinal columns from cadavers and ship them to the company\u2019s facility in Indianapolis. There, bone marrow is extracted and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen vapor at about \u2013190 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Caldwell says Ossium has \u201cprocessed thousands of donors\u201d since the company was founded in 2016. (The exact number of donors in the bank is proprietary, he says.) Ossium\u2019s frozen bone marrow has now been given to three people in total, including the Michigan woman, with a fourth transplant scheduled soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Robert Negrin, a professor of medicine at Stanford University and vice president of the American Society of Hematology, calls the transplants an \u201cimportant milestone,\u201d but whether the technique will be useful for cancer patients remains to be seen. \u201cWe have other options that work pretty well,\u201d he says, referring to partially matched donor transplants and cord blood transplants. \u201cBut there are always situations that could fall through the cracks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Negrin sees potential for deceased donor bone marrow transplants to help organ transplant patients, who currently must take immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of their lives to avoid their immune system attacking the new organ.
