I remember the<\/span> first time I watched a tutorial on Blender, a 3D computer graphics software<\/a>, explaining how metal surfaces have colored reflections<\/a>, while nonmetal surfaces don\u2019t. It was a fascinating art lesson and something I don\u2019t think I ever would\u2019ve noticed if no one had pointed it out. I felt excited to learn about such a cool, if inconsequential detail about how our world looks. While testing out Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro<\/a>, I experienced that same feeling over and over again.<\/p>\n

Generally, video game graphics have reached the coveted point of \u201cgood enough.\u201d When Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em> came out in 2017\u2014years before the PS5 would come out\u2014no one thought its visuals were lacking. Far from it<\/a>. Yet, when Sony released a remaster of this less-than-a-decade-old game that, arguably, no one asked for, it was \u2026 actually pretty good<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The visual comparisons<\/a> between the two versions of the game highlight what \u201cbetter graphics\u201d means in the modern era. Rather than focusing on things like adding more pixels or polygons, the current flex comes from either adding more stuff<\/em> to the game world or getting more frames with the visuals you have. And the PS5 Pro offers a lot more room for both. Whether that makes it worth the $700 asking price<\/a> is more subjective.<\/p>\n
