Compared to my usual main, Mercy, it somehow involves even more disorienting motion, whipping across the map, and tracking fast-moving characters. So I was excited to play on the Samsung Odyssey G6. It has a 360-Hz refresh rate that\u2019s faster than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-computer-monitors\/\">just about anything I\u2019ve played on<\/a>. At last, I finally have more frames than I need.<\/p>\n<p>The Odyssey G6 is a 27-inch flat-panel OLED display with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. It supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which supports HDR content, something that other FreeSync-compatible monitors can\u2019t necessarily do. The monitor pops onto the sturdy stand with a click, though it does support VESA mounts if you\u2019d prefer to bring your own monitor arm. It can swivel up to 60 degrees horizontally (30 in each direction), and you can rotate the screen between portrait and landscape mode in either direction.<\/p>\n<p>My only complaint on the rotation is that there\u2019s no center hole in the stand to run cables through. Human eyes don\u2019t exactly see in \u201cframes per second.\u201d Our brains are tuned to focus more on things like contrast and motion, so even if we can technically see flickering artifacts that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep07861\">flash by at very high speeds<\/a>, in practice we might not notice much difference between a 120-Hz display, where things refresh 120 times a second, and a 300-Hz display, where they refresh 300 times, simply because we\u2019re not focusing on how quickly the image on the screen updates.<\/p>\n<p>However, frame rate becomes far more relevant when you\u2019re trying to track fast-moving objects (or players) in video games. When there are fewer frames per second, objects will look less like they\u2019re moving and more like they\u2019re making little micro jumps from one place to another. You can see this effect in action <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/frames-per-second.appspot.com\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/frames-per-second.appspot.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/frames-per-second.appspot.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with this online tool<\/a>. Try comparing 24 fps to 120 fps (if your monitor can support it), with or without motion blur. The effects become pretty obvious.<\/p>\n<p><cm-unit\/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand why this works the way it does, because the Odyssey G6 doesn\u2019t just make motion smooth. It almost makes it <em>unnecessarily<\/em> smooth. I\u2019ve been using this monitor for a couple weeks, and I\u2019m still undecided on whether such smoothness is a good thing.
