The U.S. and China, the world\u2019s largest and second-largest economies respectively, are currently<\/a> the world leaders in A.I. research. Both superpowers also boast<\/a> more companies and capital than anyone else.<\/p>\n

\n

But perhaps size doesn\u2019t matter, and smaller countries like Singapore can keep pace in the race to adopt AI, experts said Tuesday at Fortune\u2019s <\/em>Brainstorm AI Singapore conference<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty clear from the outset that a country like Singapore could never compete with China and the U.S. in terms of scale,\u201d said Simon Chesterman, vice provost at the National University of Singapore and a senior director at AI Singapore, an organization that aims to build an AI ecosystem in the Southeast Asia country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But \u201cif you can\u2019t beat them on quantity, you can at least try to compete on quality,\u201d Chesterman said, arguing that countries need to \u201cmake a virtue of your small size.\u201d<\/p>\n

Singapore is the third-highest economy on Tortoise Media\u2019s global AI index<\/a>, behind just China and the U.S. and ahead of larger economies like Germany and Japan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s core pillars are \u201cinfrastructure, talent and adoption,\u201d said Serena Cesareo, a senior researcher at the London-based news organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In terms of land area, Singapore is smaller than New York City, and its size could help the government roll out its AI strategy more effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That compactness can help \u201cmake industries more competitive, deliver government services better, and help citizens understand and interact with [AI] technology in a way that builds confidence and trust,\u201d said Andrea Phua, senior director of the national AI group in Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Digital Development and Information.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not about \u201cusing AI for AI\u2019s sake,\u201d she said, but instead about using it properly, making Singaporean companies and people comfortable with using AI applications, and in turn promote innovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One way AI applications get better is by getting more users\u2013and in turn getting more data.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Singapore\u2019s focus is getting the entire workforce\u2013not just machine learning engineers and data scientists\u2013comfortable with AI, Shameek Kundu, a member of the Singapore government\u2019s AI advisory council, said. He cited the Singapore Academy of Law, and its advice to lawyers on how to use generative AI, as an example.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chesterman explained AI\u2019s not just about the data, the computational power, or the hardware, but it\u2019s also about investing in the talent to take advantage of AI developments.<\/p>\n

He compared AI to previous technological revolutions like electricity. \u201cNot everyone needs to be an electrician, but you need to know how to develop tools that will use electricity, or apply electricity in new ways,\u201d Chesterman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
