When your cybersecurity firm tasked with guarding against harmful malware unleashes the biggest global IT outage in history, there\u2019s really nowhere to hide. So Shawn Henry cut straight to the chase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOn Friday we failed you, and for that I\u2019m deeply sorry,\u201d began the post, written by CrowdStrike\u2019s chief security officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
An update pushed out from the cloud just hours before the work week came to an end caused Windows-based computer systems to crash, boot up and crash again in an\u00a0endless loop<\/a>\u00a0punctuated only by the so-called BSOD, or \u201cBlue Screen of Death\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n Key industries around the world that used Crowdstrike\u2019s Falcon software\u2014like aviation, banking and healthcare\u2014were paralyzed for hours if not days. Delta airlines is still reeling, cancelling hundreds of flights on Monday and leaving passengers stranded for days on end.<\/p>\n This CrowdStrike outage is a thing of nightmares. Imagine having to have to walk to each of the downed systems and manually fix it. Since there was no direct acknowledgement of CrowdStrike\u2019s culpability<\/a>, there was not so much as a curt\u00a0word of apology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n not even an apology? In theory Kurtz should have some practice in crisis communications, since he served as the chief technology officer for McAfee<\/a> at the time when it, too, knocked out\u00a0millions of computers<\/a>\u00a0worldwide in 2010.<\/p>\n Now, U.S. House leaders are calling Kurtz to testify before Congress<\/a> to explain the software update fiasco.<\/p>\n For some customers, the words of his CSO come too little too late.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe just deleted Crowdstrike from all our systems,\u201d Elon Musk posted on Friday, though he wasn\u2019t clear whether he was talking about one or all of his businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n We just deleted Crowdstrike from all our systems, so no rollouts at all<\/p>\n \u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 19, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In terms of lost economic output, it\u2019s hard to precisely measure the havoc his software firm visited upon the world. Microsoft<\/a> estimated just 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than 1% of all machines, were affected at the end of the day. The problem was the concentration of industries relying on CrowdStrike\u2019s Falcon software.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services,\u201d Microsoft said on\u00a0Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n Investors have since flocked to smaller rival SentinelOne, whose stock has gained more than 20% since Friday. The CrowdStrike debacle may have also factored into cybersecurity firm Wiz now\u00a0passing<\/a>\u00a0on a reported deal to be acquired by Google<\/a> parent Alphabet, reportedly\u00a0worth<\/a>\u00a0$23 billion.<\/p>\n Upon seeing the pullback in Crowdstrike, analysts at Deutsche Bank<\/a> sought to rush out a quick broker note identifying it as a short-term buying opportunity for such a high-quality stock.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHowever,\u201d it added, \u201cwe were ironically unable to publish our original research note due to the outage itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n CEO Daily provides key context for the news leaders need to know from across the world of business.
