href=\"https:\/\/extension.umn.edu\/insects-infest-homes\/cockroaches\">cockroach<\/a> is a true insect with a head, thorax, and abdomen. It has a pair of folded wings along its back and a very flat body that makes it hard to squish.<\/p>\n<p>Although they can fly, cockroaches typically walk from place to place and move quickly. One distinguishing feature is the <a style=\"outline: currentcolor none medium;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastipm.org\/index.cfm\/schools\/pests\/american-cockroach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long pair of antennae,<\/a>\u00a0which stretch from the head to the opposite end of the cockroach. Almost all types of these insects range in color from light brown to black.<\/p>\n<p>Cockroaches are <a style=\"outline: currentcolor none medium;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/publications\/books\/housing\/cha04.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">omnivores<\/a> and, in turn, eat almost every type of food. Their one saving grace is that they die in cold temperatures, so they have trouble inhabiting places further north. German cockroaches aren\u2019t limited to Germany, as their namesake would suggest\u2026so don\u2019t think you\u2019re home free from these creepy intruders. They\u2019re found worldwide in warm temperatures\u2014wherever the humans are, so are the German cockroaches.<\/p>\n<p>Each adult is 10-15 mm. long and possesses two distinct, dark bands which run across the <a style=\"outline: currentcolor none medium;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amentsoc.org\/insects\/glossary\/terms\/pronotum\">pronotum<\/a>, a plate-like structure which covers the thorax of the cockroach. This species tends to be a medium brown in color.<\/p>\n<p>German cockroaches carry diseases and can spread them through food. The males tend to be longer and narrower than females, who are stocky and have rounded bodies.<\/p>\n<p>A defining characteristic is a <a href=\"http:\/\/entnemdept.ufl.edu\/creatures\/urban\/roaches\/american_cockroach.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yellow or pale brown band <\/a>at the edge of the pronotum. Like other species, the American cockroach cannot survive in cold weather and is typically found in warmer climates. These insects contaminate food and can spread disease, making them a threat to humans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-903f3c1b gb-tabs__item\">\n<p>The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach actually is not a pest and will not be found in homes throughout the United States unless there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pestworld.org\/news-hub\/pest-health-hub\/the-truth-about-cockroaches-and-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a serious problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This species grows to be 2\u20133 in. long and has an oval-shaped body. Most males and females have a gradient in shades of brown that lightens from their almost black heads to their light tips. Males have horns they use to fight, during which they will make the <a href=\"https:\/\/entomology.ca.uky.edu\/ef014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">characteristic hissing sound.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-11\">Cockroach vs. Palmetto Bug<\/h2>\n<p>A \u201cpalmetto bug\u201d isn\u2019t another type of insect\u2014 but rather a nickname given to certain cockroaches in the American southeast.<\/p>\n<p>The Palmetto Bug (sometimes called the <a href=\"http:\/\/entnemdept.ufl.edu\/creatures\/urban\/roaches\/florida_woods_cockroach.htm\">\u201cFlorida Woods Cockroach\u201d<\/a>) is one of the biggest species at 30-40 mm. long. Unlike the German or American Cockroach, the Palmetto Bug does not tend to go indoors and actually prefers to be outside in a damp environment.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way to <a href=\"https:\/\/todayshomeowner.com\/pest-control\/guides\/palmetto-bug\/\">tell palmetto bugs apart<\/a> from other cockroaches is to look at size and color.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>German<\/strong>:\u00a0The German cockroach is 1\/3 the size of a fully grown Palmetto and has two dark bands running down the back.<\/li>\n<li><strong>American<\/strong>:\u00a0The American is the same size as the Palmetto, but has a distinct yellow color while Palmettos tend to be <a href=\"http:\/\/entnemdept.ufl.edu\/creatures\/urban\/roaches\/florida_woods_cockroach.htm\">dark brown or red<\/a> shortly after molting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cockroach vs. Water Bug<\/h2>\n<p>The term \u201cwater bug\u201d refers to a few different species of bugs, which are semi-aquatic.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have a difficult time telling the <a href=\"https:\/\/todayshomeowner.com\/pest-control\/guides\/water-bug\/\">difference between water bugs and cockroaches<\/a>. The water bug has the same body shape as a cockroach, but instead of antennae, these insects are equipped with pincers at the tops of their heads.
