Not something I <em>have<\/em> to do,\u201d she tells <em>Fortune<\/em>, but something she <em>gets<\/em> to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She, like so many other adults, understands that relationships with exercise can be complex, and often negative. That\u2019s why Gregg Goodman is starting early with positivity around the topic with her son, and why experts advise other <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/parenting-how-to-raise-happy-confident-kids\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/parenting-how-to-raise-happy-confident-kids\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">parents<\/a> to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to body image and exercise, our social and family network can be either a protective factor or a risk factor,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiapsychiatry.org\/profile\/deborah-glasofer-phd\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.columbiapsychiatry.org\/profile\/deborah-glasofer-phd\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">Deborah Glasofer<\/a>, associate professor of clinical medical psychology in psychiatry at the Columbia Department of Psychiatry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This can start at a young age, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are sponges,\u201d Glasofer tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cIf you hear your child use disparaging language about their appearance or express unhealthy ideas about <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/men-vs-women-workout-benefits\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/men-vs-women-workout-benefits\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise<\/a>, that should ring an alarm in your mind to be mindful of your potential role in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, experts weigh in on how your words and actions around fitness can impact impressionable kids in your life, at any age\u2014and how to promote a positive relationship with exercise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focus on what your body can do<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our bodies do a lot for us every day, but that can get lost when we\u2019re stressed about appearance and not feeling our greatest.<\/p>\n<p>Licensed family therapist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourjourneythrough.com\/meet-mary-beth\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.yourjourneythrough.com\/meet-mary-beth\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">Mary Beth Somich<\/a> says it\u2019s important for parents to use language that encourages their children\u2014and themselves\u2014\u2013to focus on what their body can do, versus how it looks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents can help their children develop a healthy appreciation for their bodies by discussing the strengths and abilities their child possesses,\u201d she tells <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Show your kids that being active can be fun<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Physical activity doesn\u2019t have to be grueling and challenging all the time. Even light exercise is beneficial for your <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/15\/workouts-ease-depression\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/15\/workouts-ease-depression\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">mental and physical health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And parents can do a variety of activities with their kids to bond and stay moving\u2014many of which might not even feel like exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutdoor adventures like nature <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/10\/14\/walk-before-bedtime-better-sleep\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/10\/14\/walk-before-bedtime-better-sleep\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">walks<\/a> or time at the park, sports, dance parties, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/01\/21\/how-yoga-affects-your-body-and-brain\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/01\/21\/how-yoga-affects-your-body-and-brain\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">yoga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/01\/06\/health-benefits-of-stretching\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/01\/06\/health-benefits-of-stretching\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">stretching<\/a>, gardening. The options are endless,\u201d Somich says.<\/p>\n<p>Glasofer agrees, and says \u201cfun\u201d is in the eye of the beholder, meaning it\u2019s worth it to try different activities together to see what works what you both enjoy best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaning into the fun can make it less of a chore,\u201d she says, which is what stops many people from wanting to exercise in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Avoid framing exercise as an obligation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Exercise is great for health and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/03\/28\/longevity-company-credit-score-health-surprising-results-biological-age\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/03\/28\/longevity-company-credit-score-health-surprising-results-biological-age\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">longevity<\/a> reasons, but framing it as an obligation can lead to a negative relationship with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is helpful to reframe the language used around exercise by saying, \u2018I choose to work out today\u2019 rather than \u2018I have to work out today,\u2019\u201d Somich says. \u201cThis creates a sense of empowerment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giving children the choice to do an activity also gives them control, which is a key part of developmentgrowing up, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/programs\/betterkidcare\/early-care\/tip-pages\/all\/giving-children-choices#:~:text=choose%20for%20themselves.-,Giving%20children%20choices%20helps%20them%20feel%20like%20they%20have%20some,the%20rest%20of%20their%20lives.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/programs\/betterkidcare\/early-care\/tip-pages\/all\/giving-children-choices#:~:text=choose%20for%20themselves.-,Giving%20children%20choices%20helps%20them%20feel%20like%20they%20have%20some,the%20rest%20of%20their%20lives.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\">PennState Extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Remember food isn\u2019t \u2018earned\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fitness and nutrition are intertwined\u2014and saying things like you earned the dessert you ordered because you worked out can make your child believe they don\u2019t deserve to eat the food they enjoy without working for it, too, says Glasofer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, eating and exercise are often paired, and there isn\u2019t any great reason for this,\u201d she says. \u201cNo matter your <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/13\/5-foods-mark-hyman-longevity-expert-eats-biologically-young\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/13\/5-foods-mark-hyman-longevity-expert-eats-biologically-young\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">eating habits<\/a>, exercise has benefits psychologically and physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somich also stresses the importance of not labeling foods as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d around children\u2014or even for yourself. Instead, acknowledge that healthy eating includes a variety of foods in moderation.<\/p>\n<p>Gregg Goodman says she pays close attention to how she words ideas related to food and exercise around her son.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make sure I\u2019m not using language like, \u2018This food is a reward for running,\u2019\u201d she says. She instead says her food is refueling her body after a hard effort.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Body neutrality can be just as beneficial as body positivity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy to like what we see in the mirror. But Somich says you don\u2019t have to praise your appearance to make a positive impact on your kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents can use positive <em>or neutral <\/em>language, avoiding negative or shameful body-focused discussions,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Modeling positive outlooks and behaviors doesn\u2019t have to include positive talk we don\u2019t agree with, Somich says. It\u2019s more about making sure the negative talk isn\u2019t present.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s not just what you say<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, remember that children pick up on your attitudes more than you may think, suggests Glasofer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes actions are worth a thousand words,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>And most actions don\u2019t go unnoticed by even the youngest members of a family\u2014including things like scrolling on social media, looking at different <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/05\/13\/ceo-adam-ross-wellness-habits\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/05\/13\/ceo-adam-ross-wellness-habits\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" class=\"sc-424e8006-0 lagCOr\" rel=\"noopener\">workout routines<\/a>, checking your <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/fitness-trackers-wearables-help-manage-stress\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to
