Taking the helm at the software company 10 years ago, Nadella wasn\u2019t afraid of making waves and pushing his new employees to think differently.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Instead of resting on its laurels, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> must \u201cstay humble, stay hungry, and exhibit a growth mindset,\u201d he told <em>Fortune\u2019s<\/em> Jeremy Kahn.<\/p>\n<p>Those who live by a <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/01\/what-having-a-growth-mindset-actually-means\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/01\/what-having-a-growth-mindset-actually-means\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\">growth mindset<\/a> \u201cbelieve that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work\u2014brains and talent are just the starting point,\u201d Carol Dweck, coiner of the term and a Stanford psychologist, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/li.wsu.edu\/2019\/09\/20\/promoting-growth-mindset\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/li.wsu.edu\/2019\/09\/20\/promoting-growth-mindset\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\">2015<\/a>. That\u2019s contrasted from a fixed mindset, wherein people believe their skills are innate or a fixed quality, or that \u201ctalent alone creates success.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nadella doesn\u2019t buy the latter concept. Staying on your toes in the ever-developing tech world where AI is changing the game means sometimes being willing to dance a bit, or move with the flow.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the growth mindset has become the software company\u2019s most favored buzzword of the decade, leaping from every intro psych class textbook into the speeches of Microsoft executives. The shift from being a \u201cknow-it-all\u201d to \u201clearn-it-all\u201d is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/faculty\/Pages\/item.aspx?num=59036\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/faculty\/Pages\/item.aspx?num=59036\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\">defining part<\/a> of Nadella\u2019s messaging when it comes to his desired workplace culture, writes Kahn.<\/p>\n<p>At Microsoft, being a learn-it-all requires an embrace of upskilling, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/industry\/blog\/cross-industry\/2019\/10\/01\/introduce-learn-it-all-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/industry\/blog\/cross-industry\/2019\/10\/01\/introduce-learn-it-all-culture\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\">company blog post<\/a>,\u00a0which said it\u2019s difficult, if not impossible, to gain new skills if a company\u2019s culture says \u201cwe\u2019ve learned all we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cIf you take two kids at school, one of them has more innate capability but is a know-it-all. The other person has less innate capability but is a learn-it-all. The learn-it-all does better than the know-it-all,\u201d Nadella said back in 2019 on the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/satya-nadella-growth-mindsets-learn-it-all-does-better-jessi-hempel\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/satya-nadella-growth-mindsets-learn-it-all-does-better-jessi-hempel\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\"><em>Hello Monday<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a sharp left turn from a pre-Nadella culture, explained Scott Hanselman, vice president of Microsoft\u2019s developer community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The change is seen down to the software itself. Hanselman said the tech giant had a reputation for forcing developers to use the company\u2019s entire tech stack. There\u2019s less of a top-down approach at play now, as developers are now allowed to select certain features to implement and are asked for feedback on what they\u2019d like to see more from the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAzure is beholden to them; they are the customer, and they will keep using it if they find it helpful and delightful,\u201d he told Kahn.<\/p>\n<p>Nadella isn\u2019t the only one imploring employees to learn more. Implementing a new way of work was trying at first, Kathleen Hogan, chief people officer at Microsoft, explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/microsoft-shifting-from-culture-know-alls-learn-adam-bryant\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/microsoft-shifting-from-culture-know-alls-learn-adam-bryant\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bec953bd-0 gsodiL\">2019<\/a>. Making the shift was \u201ctricky to navigate because many people wanted a simpler narrative of \u2018This is good; that was bad,\u2019\u201d she said.
