Since it launched in late 2022, OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT<\/a> has generally fended off suggestions that it has emotions or desires by responding that it\u2019s just an artificial intelligence<\/a> model. Upgrades announced by OpenAI<\/a> Monday showed the company apparently trying to make the chatbot act more like a human.<\/p>\n

In demos, the new version of ChatGPT was capable of rapid-fire, natural voice conversations, picked up on emotional cues, and displayed simulated emotional reactions of its own.<\/p>\n

During a livestream from the company\u2019s headquarters in San Francisco Monday, Mira Murati, OpenAI\u2019s chief technology officer, announced that ChatGPT will be powered by a new, more powerful AI model called GPT-4o. The model will be available to both free and paid users of ChatGPT via a new desktop app as well as the existing mobile app and web version.<\/p>\n

Murati said the GPT-4o model allows ChatGPT to respond more rapidly to voice, image, and video input than OpenAI\u2019s previous technology. In demos, she and other OpenAI employees had fast-flowing conversations with ChatGPT, which answered using a liveley and expressive female-sounding voice and nimbly kept up when interrupted.<\/p>\n

ChatGPT adopted different emotional tones during the conversation and at times responded as if it were experiencing feelings of its own. When an OpenAI employee said he had been talking about how \u201cuseful and amazing\u201d the chatbot is, it responded flirtatiously, gushing \u201cOh stop it, you\u2019re making me blush.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis just feels so magical, and that\u2019s wonderful,\u201d Murati said, adding, \u201cover the next few weeks we\u2019ll be rolling these capabilities everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

At another point in the demo, ChatGPT responded to OpenAI researcher Barret Zoph\u2019s greeting by asking \u201cHow can I brighten your day today?\u201d When Zoph asked the chatbot to look at a selfie of him and say what emotions he was showing, ChatGPT responded \u201cI\u2019ll put my emotional detective hat on\u201d and warmly said \u201cIt looks like you\u2019re feeling pretty happy and cheerful \u2026 whatever\u2019s going on, it looks like you\u2019re in a great mood.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a blog post<\/a> Monday, OpenAI\u2019s CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the significance of the new interface. \u201cIt feels like AI from the movies; and it\u2019s still a bit surprising to me that it\u2019s real,\u201d Altman wrote. \u201cGetting to human-level response times and expressiveness turns out to be a big change.\u201d<\/p>\n
