Apple’s iPads have<\/span> been on the back burner since 2022<\/a>\u2014there have been plenty of iPhones<\/a> and Macs<\/a> since, even a mixed-reality headset<\/a>, but it’s been two years since we’ve seen a new tablet. Now the wait is finally over. During its virtual event today, Apple announced the next-generation iPad Pro and iPad Air, an all-new M4 chip, as well as updated accessories.<\/p>\n

All-New M4 Chip<\/h2>\n

Since 2020, Apple has exclusively launched its M-series processors alongside another Mac. That’s no longer the case, as Apple unveiled the all-new M4 chipset debuting inside the new iPad Pro.<\/p>\n

The new chip is built on a second-generation three-nanometer process, packing more transistors into a smaller space, enhancing both power efficiency and speed. The CPU has four performance cores and six efficiency cores, which Apple says delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance than the M2 in the previous iPad Pro. There’s also a 10-core GPU for four times faster performance. As with the M3, it comes with features such as ray tracing<\/a>, mesh shading<\/a>, and dynamic caching.<\/p>\n

The shift in strategy makes sense, seeing as how Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference<\/a> (which focuses on new software capabilities coming to its entire product line) is next month. In April, Bloomberg reported<\/a> that iOS 18 will include \u201ca new slate of generative AI features\u201d and that Apple was currently in talks with OpenAI<\/a> to incorporate some of the company’s features into the next version of the iPhone operating system (this is in addition to reports that Apple is also<\/em> talking to Google<\/a> about licensing the Gemini assistant<\/a>).<\/p>\n

During its earnings calls, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been hinting at the company’s incoming AI features as well\u2014both in February<\/a> and, more recently, earlier this month<\/a>. Although Apple didn’t get into AI-specific features, it’s seemingly laying the AI groundwork with the new M4.<\/p>\n

It’s currently only available with the new iPad Pro, but we can expect Apple to implement the chip in the next-generation Macs<\/a>.<\/p>\n
