You don\u2019t have<\/span> to be nearly deaf to use a hearing aid. Many doctors urge patients to get started with the devices early<\/a>, before hearing loss becomes critical. Olive Union\u2019s Olive Max is the first hearing aid<\/a> I\u2019ve encountered designed for this specific purpose, built for users with \u201cmild to moderate\u201d hearing loss, which the company defines as 26 to 55 decibels of loss. That\u2019s right in line with my diagnosis, so I figured I\u2019d be a perfect candidate for these new devices.<\/p>\n

Out of the box, you\u2019re likely to say what I\u2014and everyone I\u2019ve been around\u2014immediately said when I first laid eyes on the Olive Max: They sure are big. Like, really big. Each looks like a Bluetooth headset from the early 2000s, except you have to wear two. At least the units, in a two-tone white and gray design, look sporty, including a wrap-around ear hook that helps keep them in place. They also carry an IPX7 water-resistance rating<\/a>. But at more than 12 grams each, they\u2019re a solid four or five times the weight of a typical over-the-counter hearing aid<\/a>. A total of eight different ear tips, in three different styles, are included in the kit to ensure you get a good fit.<\/p>\n
